Capcom Blames Piracy for Poor DMC4 PC Sales
by Aaron Linde, Aug 01, 2008 8:00pm PDTCapcom corporate officer Christian Svensson revealed that the PC edition of the company's demon-slaying action title Devil May Cry 4 (PC, PS3, 360) saw poor sales since it debuted early last month, owing in some part to rampant piracy of the game.
"It's not doing as well as I would like in the US at retail," Svensson wrote on Capcom's official blog. "It's such a good version and it really deserves better sales. I know it's getting pirated to hell and back (it was up on torrents literally the day it shipped)."
The executive added that he had pushed for more prolific digital distribution of Devil May Cry 4's PC incarnation, but was stonewalled by Capcom Japan. Despite the frustration, Svennson reiterated his commitment to bringing more Capcom titles to digital distribution outlets.
"For the record all CEI-developed titles will be distributed extremely widely via digital channels... I've spent the last year building up that channel," Svennson stated, noting that GRIN's downloadable side-scroller Bionic Commando Rearmed (PC, PS3, 360) would see "broad digital distribution for PC."
"I have a presentation I'm making shortly that I'm hoping will make that approach something we do with all of our PC content, even those developed in Japan, but no promises. It might not happen," he added.

some things that hurt sales:
-lack of hype, advertising
-not on Steam or Direct2Drive (not just convenience, adds PR for a game)
-gamepad oriented; the people with a 360 or ps3 gamepad could already play the game
-massive piracy on pc/bad copy protection (people will try to manufacture the idea that there's lack of evidence but it's true)

Most gamers with a solid gaming PC own either (or both) a PS3 or 360. Therefore, I submit that they hit damn near full market penetration with their original release. To expect high sales numbers of the PC version is absurd.
Thus we move to the Piracy defense. Piracy is a problem, we get. No doubt the PC version was tossed around the torrent swarms like a beer bong at a frat party. However, I guarantee that there were 360 disc images available via the same channels the day before the console copies were even on sale. Not that one makes the other right, but funny how we never hear the piracy complaint as long as discs are flying off the shelf, no? That's all I'm going to say about that for fear of another piracy related nastygram from the chatty mods.
Ok, maybe just this. I'm willing to bet most of the people pirating the game probably purchased it for a console and didn't feel like coughing up another $50 to have the game on the PC platform. Of course, legally that would be wrong, but I wager a good deal of people are not ethically opposed to it. As for me, I found it to be an amusing Gamefly rent. Not really my style of game, I didn't spend a good deal of time with it before it went back in it envelope.

I've never competed in the Olympics, but ran around the track at my highschool 15 years ago. If I were to compete in the Olympics today, I would surely lose, horribly - then I will blame it on the cheaters, rather than blame myself for competing in an area I know I don't have a chance with.

Maybe they should fix their marketing before blaming shitty sales on piracy?
I know piracy IS an issue, but I don't think that was their only problem with this one. :P
Now when they bring SF4 to the PC and it doesn't sell then I'll believe them a bit more.
Capcom please note: every game is on torrents literally the day it ships. Every one. It doesn't mean that your game was singled out or special or anything.

I certainly have pushed for digital distribution on the title (globally, I'm responsible for all DD deals) but Capcom Japan so far has not allowed it. For the record ALL CEI developed titles will be distributed extremely widely via digital channels (not just Steam or Direct2Drive, but more than a dozen partners across more than 100 sites/portals for everything we do). I've spent the last year building up that channel and I'm continuing to add partners even in advance of Age of Booty, MotoGP, Neopets, Dark Void and Flock shipping.
I have a presentation I'm making shortly that I'm hoping will make that approach something we do with all of our PC content, even those developed in Japan, but no promises. It might not happen.
In the mean time, Ben Judd has completely understood CEI's strategy and Bionic Commando Rearmed will have broad digital distribution for PC (not quite as many as CEI titles, but close).
Given that, it seems as though the focus of this news article is somewhat misplaced.

I'm betting Bioshock PS3 will have the same fate, as the people who really wanted to play it already have on XBOX360 or PC.
