Activision: PlayStation 3 Will Outsell Xbox 360

During a conference call today, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith detailed the company's expectations for console sales across 2008, revealing its belief that the PlayStation 3 will sell more systems than the Xbox 360 this year.

By the end of the current calendar year, Activision believes the consoles will sell:

PlayStation 3: 8 million units
Xbox 360: 6-7 million units
Wii: 15 million units
PlayStation 2: 4-5 million units

Griffith also noted the company's expectation that handhelds will grow "in excess of 24 million," but did not provide a specific breakdown between PSP and Nintendo DS.

I was in a meeting one time with some rep for EA pitching a game idea back in like 2004 for the coming next gen systems and the EA rep was saying how EA had pretty much already decided that PS3 had already won the next gen console war and that they were planning on making it their focus over Xbox.

It was just funny because the 360 has really become the lead console (lets forget about Wii for the moment) at least for a couple years, and if it falls behind PS3, it made a pretty damn big dent.

The PS3 has been outselling the 360 for the last few months in North America hasn't it? It'll be interesting to see how the holidays pan out.

No one else wants a 360. Just the fanboys and the people they talked/talk into it. PS3 has finally started coming into it's own and blue ray is the icing on the cake.

I've had my PS3 for a few moths now and my 360 since last year. I don't know about sales but I'll guarantee the PS3 will physically outlast the 360 by a long stretch. The damned thing is built like a tank.

They have adjusted these since there earlier numbers they put out this year as they had the 360 outselling the PS3. I have a feeling after they see July NPD they will adjust them back and most certainly after August NPD.

That's kind of DUH...I mean the Xbox has been out for a year longer than the PS3, so of course it's going to run lower on steam than the 'new' guy.

Well, being an "insider" in the industry, Mr. Griffith probably has a better idea of what to expect in terms of console sales. But I find it highly unlikely that will happen considering how Microsoft pretty much stole the show at this year's E3. I for one was holding out on getting the PS3 until FF13 came out, but now there's no need for me to do so.

In any other market id assume this kind of statement would actually affect the amount of units sold. Thankfully a minute fraction of people buying a console will hear this prediction so.. May the best console win!
