Unreal Engine 4 Due Next Console Generation; Estimated by Epic as 2012 to 2018, PC Coming Last

53
Following Epic's statement that the next iteration of its popular Unreal Engine development tools will target the PlayStation 4 and next Xbox first, president Mike Capps has roughly estimated that the next generation will run from 2012 to 2018.

"We've got Unreal [Engine] 4 in production right now," Capps said at GamesFest, according to Gamasutra "It's going to be in the next console generation--our rough guess is 2012 [to] 2018."

In its early years, Epic was primarily focused on PC software and technology with titles such as Jazz Jackrabbit and Unreal Tournament. Like many other formerly PC-centric companies, such as Microsoft, the studio has since become a major player in the console market.

"Version 4 [of Unreal Engine] will exclusively target the next console generation," founder Tim Sweeney said earlier this year. "Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360, Sony's successor for the Playstation 3--and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also...PCs will follow after that."

The current version of Epic's Unreal technology, Unreal Engine 3, has proven to be a popular choice for numerous PC and consoles developers as they craft titles for multiple platforms while attempting to take advantage of each platform's strengths.

i wish epic would develop the engine for the next gen consoles and the pc at the same time instead of giving the market in which they started the shaft.

The Unreal franchise is like the hot girl you take care of why her modeling career is just starting. Then she finally makes it to the big times and then turns around and says "TA TA! It's been fun!" and runs off with the rich asshole.

UT3 has all but proven that there is nothing left of the market they started in on PC.

UT3 has nothing to do with this. this is just the engine. mass effect, bioshock and medal of honor airborne are some PC games using the unreal engine 3. i'm sure i left out a bunch

I thought UT3 PC port didn't get the attention it deserved? Why would PC gamers care to support a quick port of a less than popular game?

Because it's not a quick port?

I don't remember exactly but I think the gripes were UI and browser. A big step back from what PC users had in prior UT games, secondary to primary develpment on console. I could be wrong, but I know there were some issues. I never checked it out because people don't play vanilla past the first 2 weeks.

The UI may not be optimal, but it is far from horrible. People blew that way out of proportion, as usual.

Agreed Quake 3's interface was not much better and it is considered one of the best PC deathmatch games of all time.

UI was fine, the menus were crap. If you have to wait for the menu to load first every time you press ESC then you know it's shit. And every other sub-menu had also it's share of loading times. I call it crap. The game itself was crap too, frankly a large step from previous UT games.

Because UT3 proved that Epic hasn't done anything good with the franchise since UT2k4? I'm sorry, but UT3 is an average shooter compared to what's out there for the PC...Epic rested on their laurels like id did with Doom3. Great looking engine, average game.

Doom3 was id resting on it's laurels? If that's the case I can't wait to see what they do when they aren't loafing around goofing off! lol

Graphics engine wise, yeah, it was great at the time...as far as a game goes, it was pretty generic.

He makes it clear the PC is their last priority. By contrast, all Crytek has really said is that they're supporting consoles rather than be PC exclusive. But Epic doesn't even consider treating the PC equally.

I think they're just cranky at the UT3 sales. But to get exceptional sales, you need to make an exceptional game. And from what I've heard, they failed to innovate.

Worst than failing to innovate, they failed to polish. The game was rushed.

          After ~three years of development?

yup. It's still possible to rush out a game, even after three years of development. "Who cares if the UI is slow to load and the internal GameSpy browser sorts ping speeds by strings instead of integer values? LET'S GET PAID!!"
