Morning Discussion

The news is certainly more interesting than it was yesterday, as we clear the shadow of E3. Although, some are calling it more shade than shadow.

We're finding out more about LittleBigPlanet for PS3 as it gets closer, and the content distribution model sounds really neat. With both this and Spore pushing user created content, it will be interesting to see how their success applies to further adoption of the trend.

I don't quite understand the allure of this. Chrono Trigger had New Game + which was used to get the alternate endings, but what will FFIV have? I heard something about added bosses, but why would they force me to replay the game just to face them? By the time I've played the game twice I'll be well over level 70 and I can't see them being much of a threat.

This will be the first final fantasy game i've ever bought. I've been on the market for a good DS game, but I've always hated FF's 'random' encounters. Hopefully with the DS they put in some sort of quick save system.

      • reply
        July 22, 2008 7:52 AM

DS you can just close the lid. is that what you mean?

      • reply
        July 22, 2008 7:55 AM

Should be a quicksave system, they used one in the GBA ports. What they do is you *still* can only make a permanent save on save points or on the world map, but you also have a temp save that deletes itself once loaded. This is so you can get up and leave if you need to.

However no, you won't be able to save whenever you want (unless they've added this feature without my knowledge). It's not so bad though, they rarely have you go for more than 5-10 minutes without the ability to save. So you never lose much.

I wouldn't count on a quick save system although I'm unsure. Good decision though, this game is freaking magical. I can't think of a more charming, tightly packaged, challenging but involving JRPG out there. It does everything very well, and it was the first of it's kind IMO. By the way, the music in this game is top notch, I can't wait to hear the remixed versions.

I'm not the biggest fan of the remixed tunes, though I admit I've only heard them through youtube. I love the remix used on the website, but thats not indicative of the actual game. :(

In order to remake VI with any sort of quality it would have to be a PS3/360 game. There are far too many details in the scenery for simplistic DS 3D to work. FFIV was very basic in terms of art, so it doesn't lose much of anything. In fact looking at the world map it has gained some.

A real FFVI remake on next gen consoles would be fucking mind blowing. Especially with full rescripted cutscenes.

It would be possible of course but I think a lot of detail would be lost. Since a full console remake is not going to happen I'd like to see FF6 for the next portable gen since they're bound to move on to FF5DS now.

            July 22, 2008 8:44 AM

I'm talking about a 3D version, the 2D version is already on the GBA. A 3D version would lose 95% of the little details and would end up being far more simplistic than the original. Which kind of loses the whole point of a graphical remake.

That doesn't warrant another port. I wasn't ecstatic about what they did to the music, but I didn't think it was too bad. The battle theme though....yeah...:( What happened? Some of the other tunes aren't too bad.

      Impressions so far...

I picked this up from Breast Buy on my work break, which then devolved into a 2 hour jumbo break from playing this game. Here's what I'm seeing from gameplay to Mist so far:

      - Graphics are fantastic. Everything is fluid. Models are updated, the direction is great, it's got a 3d feel in a 2d background that's killer. Love the minimap at the top screen.

      - Music, mostly faithful but updated versions. Some of the more powerful songs are left as is. Pure awesome. Sound design is also solid.

-Dialogue. Big suprise here- all the translation is overhauled and set to a more middle english / university level english level. :) I love it....so far I like what they've done and it feels very different.

-Interface. Really damn cool. It's all seamless and neatly packaged, your avatars look better, menus slick, added a thought bubble that corresponds with the story at given points of time. Neat touch, kind of like a 'character's thoughts' or whatever..

      - There is a quick save option in addition to normal save! Yes!

Basically this is badass. It's early but it already has that feel of 'the definitive' edition of this game. This is what started all the Final Fantasy magic people - go out and buy it!

Seriously? Or are you just shitty at it? If you are serious then you've just made me wet in the pants area. Normally you never have to grind until Mysidia, where you should level Palom/Porom a few for spells.

            July 22, 2008 4:03 PM

You start out with maybe ~200 HP on Kain and Cecil, and the monsters are doing a good 30-40 per hit, so you tend to come out of battle with only a little over half your HP.

So, until you grind, you pretty much have to hit the inn every two battles, or die.

It's not what I could call "fun" challenge, because there's nothing that I, as a player can do about it short of grinding...which is really not interesting.

Apparently it gets a lot better later on, once you've started giving your characters new abilities.

I saw something about giving Cecil the kick ability, and replacing his attack command with that, while giving him counter, which always counters, and draw attack, which forces everyone to attack...so every single enemy attack causes an immediate counterattack against all enemies.

you're doing something wrong b/c i haven't needed to hit the inn til like after 6-7 battles outside of Baron. Your guys attack reasonably hard, kill the fags before they knick you up too bad. So far it feels harder than the SNES american version (where outside of Baron is like a lawn mower) but by no means REALLY hard

It's definitely harder than any previous version of the game. But not in an interesting way, in a more "Hey, I guess I have to grind now" way.
