I have a decent secondary system with a loads of HD space that I want to use as a Media Center PC for my family. It's going to be for movies I rip from our collection, tons of pictures, home vids, music, etc. However I will not be using it as a PVR.
And it appears that most of the software solutions are TV centric...
I'd love to use XBMC, but I have a ton of HD content that I'll be putting on it, and I know the XBMC (xbox version) can't play native HD. I know there is a 2nd XBMC option with the thumbdrive setup, but I want to have a remote setup for it, and supposedly they haven't gotten the TD version working with one yet.
So atm, I'm looking towards Vista's Media Center as my best option. However my fear is that most of the content will not be playable in Media Center due to lack of codec support etc.
Does anyone know of a good site or resource for what I'm looking for? Perhaps a good guide somewhere on how to get a bunch of codecs into Vista's Media Center, as well as some other tweaking etc? Can anyone help me out?
(it's a shame I can't use XBMC; I'm constantly hearing about how amazing it is, and looking at videos, the interface seems REALLY slick)
ps. I know there's Tversity.. but honestly the interface is horrid.

It's about 100 times "worse" than the movie. In the movie, Wesley Gibson tells his boss to STFU... But in the comic, he rapes a hollywood actress and kills her after he joins the fraternity. He shoots the guy his girlfriend is cheating on him with. Those are just examples. I think he sniped a pregnant woman, too, just for fun. It is so over the top and violent and ridiculous. I love it. 10/10

And for a moment I imagined what would happen if he died. Now, we all know this man's mastery of all things asshole, his knack for abusing other people, his brillians for absolute fucking evil... I know many people who have worked for him and who have wild stories about his horrible behavior, and I have personally been in the room (once) during a business partnership meeting in which he essentially told us we were a bunch of worthless idiots... and yet, I realized I will probably cry like a girl the day he dies. Undoubtedly one of the greatest people to live in our lifetimes.
I also realized I'll probably cry when Bill Gates goes too. Another amazing guy who I have a lot of admiration for.
Anyway, I really hope Steve gets healthy. That article was very troubling.

I was bored and tried with an image processing package. Before filtering:

I did an FFT, painted out the peaks from the screen, inverse filter, a little blur to remove the high frequency noise, and stretched the levels a bit:

Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the hard drive isn't detected and it takes longer than usual for it to pass the motherboard screen. It takes subsequent reboots for it to finally get detected and boot into windows.
I went into the bios and the only drive thats detected is the DVD drive when this happens. I have to click on a slot and hit "Auto Detect Hard Drive". This is a Gigabyte mobo btw. Even when I hit auto detect, it still sometimes doesn't show up in the list of drives.
What can be causing this? Is this because of a faulty hd? Or something else can be the culpret? I did format the hd a week or two ago and in the middle of the format I accidently turned off the pc :/ But a full format afterwards went ok and Vista still installed fine.
Aye this is getting annoying having to reboot like crazy :(

First off, Gotham ISN'T representing New York City, but more likely Chicago. The license plates in the film are exact replica's of Illinois state license plates, only difference being that Illinois is replaces with Gotham.

I'm totally stoked. Some of ya'll will recall my adventures with FFIII from over my winter break (http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=15982877) and that alone took me almost 70 hours to beat. That was after trying to beat the last leg of the game three times.

About halfway through National Treasure 2, around the part where they decide they need to kidnap the President, my wife remarked, "This is ridiculous."
Now the movie is just about over (at least I think so, they're on some giant tilting platform thing), and she just said, "This is the dumbest movie I've ever seen. I'm glad we didn't pay for it."

I have never encountered the jackass with baby at the theaters before but ive heard about them and its worse than people say, I had to pull out the big guns and go straight for the full turn with angry stare and she was completely immune. The guy next to me attempted a full turn with "Seriously?" in a loud voice and that didnt phase her either, though it did make one of her kids start kicking my seat.
Eventually the theater sent in their meekest female employee who had to warn her 6 separate times before finally kicking her and her family out.
I think ill be going to see it again, the magic trick at the beginning was great.

In this meeting a guy came in and raved about Ruby on Rails. I remember playing around with it back in the day (circa 2006) but thought it wasn't ready for primetime.
He was a microsoft guy and has converted to RoR and thinks its great for webapps. I just bought some Ruby books and will read them this week for the next meeting next week.
Anyone here have commercial experiences with RoR? Is it really that scalable? Is it easy to stay on the rails or can programmers wander off and make a mess of things?
How easy it is to build custom stuff for it?
