Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Jul 18, 2008 5:40am PDTGood morning Shackers, how is Friday treating you? E3 is pretty much a wrap but that just means you can finally catch up on all the news. We previewed Megaman 9 (Trailer here), Flower,
Lips,
Lego Batman and
Rock Band 2 and much more.
Plus there was notable MMO news, with World of Warcraft announcing they would have more than 500 Xbox 360-esque achievements in the new expansion. And the existence of the long rumored Knights of the Old Republic MMO was openly acknowledged by EA, though no release date is even estimated as yet.

Here's Devin Faraci's review from CHUD, he generally has very similar opinions on movies to my own, and reading this today put it into much better words than I could have:
http://chud.com/articles/articles/15629/1/REVIEW-DARK-KNIGHT-THE-DEVIN039S-TAKE/Page1.html
There are some spoilers there, if you're worried about that sort of thing. I'll just say in addition to that review that all the evangelizing towards the end such as "This is who Batman is and what he stands for, and Gotham needs him" really made me dislike how he was handled in the movie even more than I had up to that point. I wasn't expecting this, since I generally love the comic book representations of the character, especially the Batman: Year One and Dark Knight Returns stuff. I just felt like it was all way too heavy-handed, and that Chris Nolan couldn't really decide what he wanted to do with the character at any point in the film. It's telling when even people who loved the film admit that you could've almost completely cut Batman out of the movie and had just as good of a movie, if not a better one.
Hopefully a few people on the Shack today feel somewhat the same day and can sympathize, here. However, seeing The Watchmen trailer (without knowing it was going to be in front of the film) for the first time was totally worth my $10. Even though almost no one in the theatre besides me was reacting to it, I loved every second of that thing and am even more excited about it now.

For Affliction, Aleksander Emelianenko vs Paul Buentello is canceled. It was a prelim fight anyway, but still, one I was looking forward to. :(
For UFC, James Irvin came in overweight at 207.5. lol. Also, Yushin Okami has a broken hand, so if Silva wins without injury, it'll be him vs Patrick Cote sometime in the fall.

NY AREA LAN PARTY
Me and Draco will be hosting a lan at his house, with a bunch of local people coming (maybe 10?) and need to get shackers in on this, considering we won't be going down to qcon this year.
The date for it is August 1st to the 3rd (friday - sunday). It will be just outside of Middletown, NY, which is about 70-80 miles from the city. If you live in the area and would be up for it, please sign up. The shackmeet page for it is here:
http://www.shacknews.com/shackmeet/events.x?id=5047
And for those who are curious about the what will be at the lan, we will have plenty of bawls, beer, soda, food, etc.
Probably 2 HDTVs for xboxen/whatever and plenty of room for people.
2 servers that will host any number of games, a shitload of bandwidth to go around on the gigabit network setup inside, and just generally awesome people to game with.
We'll deciede what games to play when we know how many poeple will be coming most likely. The sleeping situation is the only questionable thing here, but most likely we'll just have people bring sleeping bags/whatever and sleep on the floors + couches in the house.
As is we have enough room for whoever shows up, and all are welcome. We want to make this the best lan we've thrown since we started this, so I very much encourage anyone in the area to come, you won't be disappointed and just based off the previous LANs and general quality of shackers, it will be a blast.

It can be anything - an announcement, the way a game showed, a press conference - anything.
Right now, I think my favorite thing about this E3 is how good Mirror's Edge looks. I love the idea that someone is making a first-person game that focuses on movement and spatial awareness, much like Portal did - although Mirror's Edge seems to be doing it in a much more realistic and interesting way.
Runner up goes to Far Cry 2, for having a really interesting overall design and looking like it's really coming together.

Hostile Waters is an amazing RTS/action hybrid that worked really, really well and had a great story by Warren Ellis and acted by Brit sci-fi legends. Loved that game, so very underated.
The Club also got slated but I for one enjoy the hell out of the concept and gameplay, just classic score attack goodness. Shame it died a death at retail.

A LOT of people are bitching about how bad that trailer was.
My adage has always been "if you think you can do better, do it."
So yeah, we should have a contest to see who can make the best fan-created trailer. Would anyone be up for this?

I was introduced to something last night that I had not experienced in a PC game before ... "God Mode"
This to me was similar to many of my previous gaming experiences. (i.e. using the game genie on NES, playing NCAA Football on "Rookie" mode) I always steered away from the challenged and just played the games to get as far as I could.
But now I seem to have a "gaming conscience" - I feel bad for playing part of Half-Life in "God Mode"
Should I forget that I even know about God Mode, or does it actually serve a useful purpose in a particularly difficult part of a game?
for those that can refrain from the criticism, I still have my blog: http://www.howdoiplaygame.com

SPOILER: Heath Ledger improvised when he started clapping inside his jail cell in a mocking and sardonic capacity as the Mayor spoke. The clapping was not scripted but Christopher Nolan immediately encouraged the crew to continue filming and the sequence was included in the film.
That scene was so great, god damn I wish he was still alive :(

Just checked the mail and I finally got some miracle fruit. I also have 4 lemons, 4 limes, 1 bottle of lemon juice (not lemonade), beer, and some Mexican food. I'll update this thread with my experience.
