First Half-Life 2: Episode Three Concept Art Revealed
by Nick Breckon, Jul 10, 2008 1:07pm PDTThe first widely available piece of concept art for the final episode of Valve's Half-Life 2 saga has been uncovered via the 2008 IntoThePixel E3 art gallery.
The piece--created by Valve artists Ted Backman, Jeremy Bennett, and Tristan Redford--appears to show Half-Life hero Gordon Freeman within a large Citadel-like environment, a Combine Advisor looming ominously overhead.
IntoThePixel's website labels the art as related to "Half Life EP3," with platforms listed as PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Valve has been mum about the final episode in the trilogy since the release of Episode Two last year. Episode Three will reportedly not be appearing at E3, though Valve will be making an appearance at the event to show off its zombie shooter Left 4 Dead.
Thanks to pixel34 for the tip.

The powerlines, and capsules are cool... Screens... lifts... all good...
But the whole sharp shards of metal thing just seems boring and uninspired...
Its like a crystal cavern or something from Superman... bleh....
I didn't like the look of the citadel at all... :/

The texture resolution definitely needs to be increased, micro detailing of textures would be good too, parallax mapping would do wonders for cave environments, maybe realistically destructible objects as well if it's feasible, it would make throwing around wooden crates a lot more fun.
Something else I would really like is to allow turning of the objects that you pick up with the gravity gun (can use the middle mouse button scroll to turn the object up and down), a door is useful for stopping bullets but it's not going to do much if you pick it up side ways, which is what usually happens as most objects are lying flat on the ground.
Also making objects you pick up slightly transparent would help avoiding crashing into things, as they obscure the vision quite a bit.
Looking forward to what they come up with. Go VALVe!

- set in/around an Antarctica research base a la Black Mesa? I could see HEV suit cold resistance being the new flashlight game mechanic. :)
- 7-8+ hours of gameplay
- dramatic conclusion, possibly setting up HL3 (with hopefully some closure :D)
I think VALVe did an exceptional job polishing/making the HL2 episodes, but sincerely hope they will work on a full length HL3 next...new/upgraded engine, new feature set, time for R&D etc. I'm all for the return of episodes after the series next big step, so after HL3, then HL3:EP1-3, for example.
When EP3 is released, it would be cool if they could implement the 360 achievements for HL2 and EP1 on the PC.
An "epic" mode for the sequel and the 3 episodes where you could play them - in their entirety - seamlessly as one continuous game, would be really cool. They end and start each episode so smoothly that, barring engine/code set up constraints, it seems like it would work well.

I swear to god if they repeat the shooting electro balls.. hurling consoles and bodies around gameplay yet again I will probably... enjoy it.
They REALLY need to something different, epic, for the final levels in this one though.
