Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jul 08, 2008 6:07pm PDTSo as there were just a few too many quirks with the video player we had been using
here the last couple of months, we've swapped around again. This time we're back to the
original player which had a major new release so it actually now supports the stuff we
wanted in the first place. It will still get a bit more tweaking, but hopefully much
easier for everyone to deal with.

It's like, somebody took their favorite part of an RPG and made a game where you do nothing but that. It's as if there should be companion games where in one I do nothing but talk to people, one where I just steal everything in sight, and another where I brew potions all day. This one is the "kill enemies and get loot" edition. The game is nothing but a random item dispenser, like ProgressQuest with an entertaining mini-game on the front. It's just big generic meaningless areas filled with thousands upon thousands of generic meaningless fights punctuated by much harder boss fights in contrast. And even those only seemed to be hard (for my character anyway) because the later bosses basically have attacks that blow up the whole screen. But that's fine because you can instantly teleport away, heh.
It's all very polished of course, but I found it odd that for a game that was 99% combat, I never gave any enemy encounter a second thought unless it was a boss fight. It's just a sea of red shirt enemies. Or maybe more accurately, it's like a lawn of them, that you mow through. There's no pacing, and no variety. Maybe that's just a side effect of randomly generated layouts. You get variety for multiplayer, but you lose the ability to tweak encounters.
The game has characters, towns, quests, and a story in much the way Super Mario Bros has a story. It's just a single coat of "here's why you should fight from point A to B to C," not that it pretends to be much of anything different.
It's not that I don't "get it." I know the point of the game is to mow down thousands of enemies, find goodies, and try to take on the hard bosses. (whether single or multi) I know millions of people love the hell out of it. I had fun playing it too, even though I got impatient and was mostly just trying to run through the last 2/3rds of act V. I just see no desire to ever play it again, basically. I don't know if I see it as wasting my (small number of) gaming hours, or whether I'm just spoiled by other games. I do like this kind of stuff, but as part of a more complete RPG.

In this new thread there's already 3 Diablo 2 posts. Not good! Needs more TQ!
How's everyone doing that has been playing recently? I'm halfway through Act2 with my Earth toon and she's at 23 now. I'll be playing shortly if anyone wants to join up. I'll post info then. Seems like a lot of you are going War/Dream. We're going to have an unstoppable party of Shackers later on. Need to make a mod that increases difficulty ten fold :P

Online Dating People...
So I've been working on a dating site in my free time as a programming experiment. I figure I might as well put it out there on the internet (who knows, maybe it'll be the plentyoffish). Right now my main focuses are preventing fraudulent profiles, video profiles, and getting rid of all of the fluff that sites like okcupid have with all of those tests and blogs and what have you.
I wanted to get some feedback from you guys about what kind of things you guys like about dating sites and what kinds of things you don't like. Are there any features you'd like to see in a dating site that nobody has or isn't doing well enough? Are there any features you hate and wish dating sites didn't have?
Also, if anyone can think of a great domain name I'll be greatly in your debt.

Anyone had this happen? What did you use, did it damage your clear coat / paint? I'm gonna try Tar / Bug remover tonight to see if that does anything but wanted to ask here first!
I still can't get the comments system to work correctly with it, disabled greasemonkey CTRL-F5'd, so I have just reserved myself to looking at comments really fast before the windows goes to the subthread.
Now though, firefox doesn't remember my tab history. Set it all up under the options, main, remember my viewing history from last time and the thing still looses my history when closing out. So frustrating, is there a way to go back to ff2?

ATTN SEATTLE MENZ
I need recommendations for a good restaurant in Seattle. Something that would be good for a birthday/special occasion, small group, but it doesn't have to be a formal dress kinda place. Price is not terribly important, just great food/atmosphere/etc. Ideally nothing that requires a reservation.

Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do with the G.P.S. According to Apple, the iPhone’s G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example.
This makes me reconsider it. How bad is the GPS if it can't handle something that simple? I know the Kaiser/Tilt and um...EVERY SINGLE GPS CAPABLE PHONE supports this, how did Apple screw this up?
