Cryptic Teases Star Trek Online Reveal

14
The mystery of which studio is handling Star Trek Online may soon be at an end, going by a new countdown clock on Cryptic Studios' website. The countdown, which concludes on July 28, uses an early piece of STO concept art as its background.
Left, Star Trek Online concept art. Right, Cryptic Studios' website.

Originally under development at Perpetual Entertainment, the PC MMO was transferred to an unknown studio when Perpetual closed shop earlier this year.

Rumors soon began circulating that City of Heroes and Champions Online developer Cryptic would be handling the game and was hiring former Perpetual employees. Those reports are technically unverified, though the countdown implies their validity.

Thanks to Binge Gamer for the heads up regarding the countdown.

I do not see how they will turn Star Trek into an MMO. I would prefer a Mass Effect like single player game with some onine co-op for multiplayer.

If done right it could be an amazing mmo, with an infinite universe of IP to draw from. But they will fuck it up, rest assured.

The problem with trek has always been that it's way, way to utopian for my tastes.

"WAIT! You can't do that! It's against the Prime Directive!"

Oh God, fuck the prime directive. Fuck it in it's boring ass.

Who said you'd have to play as someone in the Federation? Also the Prime Directive was broken many times in the series. =D

What would you do as Borg? Just watch your character play progress quest style?

Which is why it's safe to assume you can't play as Borg.

Perpetual's original plans had the game taking place quite a bit after the Borg threat.

You have obviously never watched Deep Space Nine then. Deep Space Nine was the best of the bunch for the simple fact that it was the most human and was the only series in the history of Star Trek that actively took inspiration from real-world issues in it's storylines - or at least made it known.

Deep Space Nine had very little throwing around of the Prime Directive and more throwing around of torpedoes, phasers, and dead bodies.

Awesome, apart from the fact thats JUST THE FEDERATION. How about cardassians, klingons, romulans and any other war like race in trek.

My problem is that many times in the series they've alluded to the fact that life in Star Fleet is, for the most part, boring tedium. That's why being in command is such a big deal, and why everyone goes through the bullshit for a shot at commanding. It sounds perfect for an MMO, har har, except that grinding bear pelts is STILL more interesting than getting your security report into Worf by 0700 hours.

They have a lot of potential with the academy (or it's romulan/klingon/borg counterpart), and with the holodeck. Definitely watching this one.

Roddenberry was in the military I believe, so I wouldn't be surprised if Star Fleet was heavily influenced by his own experience.

Really? Is this rhetorical or you can't possibly imagine how you would make an MMO with the Star Trek license?

Ooo thats not a bad idea. Bioware shoulda gotten some rights and just reskinned everything into Star Trek.
