Morning Discussion

So everyone have a good weekend? We just got the official confirmation for Rock Band 2, details are a bit sparse for now but sounds like it should be good times. Also forthcoming is Gears of War 2, with an official multiplayer trailer narrated by the always refined Cliff Bleszinski. And kids, don't hack Valve.

I'm on my 3rd 360 and it locks up a lot. I've basically stopped playing console games for the time being. My kids who don't seem to mind the lockups are playing it in its final days. i keep hoping for a newer more stable 360 to come out.

Do your xboxes happen to be breaking while you kick them across the room or something? I know they generate a lot of heat but you're not supposed to play "hot potato" with them while they're on.

Be interesting to see whether you ever need to replace your PS3 - if not, it just confirms what we already know.. there's a serious problem with the 360 hardware!! Hope that new revision with the CPU / GPU integrated will resolve the problems!

Don't know how much the electricity would affect the xbox, being behind a big power converter brick. This is especially considering everything else in the house seems to work.

why would only the 360 respond to his "bad grounding" and not any other piece of electronics in his house? TV? PS3? Any other electronic appliance?

            • reply
              June 30, 2008 7:23 AM

If the 360 can't work off the same electricity that everything else in his house works OK with, it sounds like the 360 is still at fault.

          • reply
            June 30, 2008 7:30 AM

The 360 doesn't give two shits if his outlets are grounded at all, much less "well" grounded. Many (most?) of them don't even come with grounded plugs.

Plus there's the little point already made that every other electronic thing in the house has no problem.

Well you could have a weak/intermittent connection.

My point was even if it did require a grounded plug, it's a safety thing and not a functional thing. Nothing "needs" a ground connection to work. Some appliances (notably ones with metal housings) just become less safe without one.

The neutral prong in an AC plug is essentially the circuit ground, and the ground prong is the chassis ground. The neutral and ground wires are connected together at the breaker panel. It's just the neutral wire is meant to carry current and the ground wire is not. (during normal operation anyway)

Awesome. You know, it would be fun to write an article to see how much difference these things make, if any. I'm guessing the difference is nonexistent to imperceptible. Electronics don't run directly on AC power, any power they use has already been filtered and regulated and buffered and all that shit.
