3dfx on OpenGL

On Friday when I posted all those screenshots and a pretty positive first impression of the Voodoo5 a bit of a debate opened up about 3dfx and OpenGL support. Brian Sharp of 3dfx actually showed up on the boards and gave a bit of an explanation of what the current state of 3dfx's OpenGL ICD is. It's a bit techy but if you're into that sort of thing its pretty interesting.

  • Ya know what? I'm damn glad I dumped my DooDoo2 and didn't get a DooDoo3 way the hell back when. I decided to be a 3dfx rebel. So, I coughed up the dough and bought a TNT2.

I put the v2 in the computer at work. During quiet moments, I fire up a little q2 in all it's v2 glory....YIKES! Where'd the colors go???

Then, I come home, pop open a Guinness, and enjoy the gaming nirvana that is Nvidia.....ahhh, that's better.....ooh, yeah, that's the way....a little lower....yeah, right there.....ouch, watch the damn teeth, will ya???

    CHEERS!

  • I just pulled my CL TNT out of my machine and dropped the V3 back in, although my V3 has gone through some slight changes...
It now has a 486 CPU heatsink & fan mounted to it (NOTE: This is the result of a bored geek getting delusions of grandeur while stumbling around his local Fry's superstore) That, and it has successfully overclocked to a speed of 179 (insert flames'OOH's and AHH's' here.) I had it set like a 3500TV at 183, but I don't think the RAM liked that too much.
One of the bigger determining factors which prompted me to toss the V3 back in my system was Unreal Tournament. UT looks like complete shit in D3D. My biggest question is, "Why does Unreal D3D look so much better than UT D3D?" Just what the hell did they do to the renderer between games? Oh yeah, I tried the Glide wrapper for the CL TNT. Can you say 'superflous'? I knew you could.

Outside of that, i'd like to be able to p1mp Nvidia and say that the TNT1 outran the V3 in all the other games I play, but... it didn't. My V3 has been quicker at every turn, and even moreso now. I'm waiting for the next offering from both companies before upgrading. The next jump I make is going to be into the realm of full-screened, anti-aliased, 32-bit color, at 300 fps in Quake 3. Uh, wait... No, nevermind.

  • being a big fan of pin ball machines and game arcades ,I wasn't allowed to have a console or a computer in the house - which in its self is ironic when one of my cousins "who is now retired" was a research and development head at digital computers was and is highly regarded and looked up to in the family ,I played almost everything and anything video that came out , now if you only play computer or console you don't know what your missing ,nothing comes close to the arcade feel in gaming and most are powered by 3dfx video and I have to say the video must be good ,do to the fact that the machines are being broken into to steal the video boards ,which I'm told cost quite a few thousand dollars to replace.

  • I hope that 3dfx's next cards will use full Opengl. One of the reasons I HAD to get an Nvidia card, back when I had a humble Virge and SLI. I NEEDED full opengl heh =)

As for creating a new API... well I'm not too worried, I just don't think that it'll be used enough and will wither away really quickly. I think the only reason Glide lasted so long was because none of the previous Voodoo cards HAD full opengl, so they had to come up with something that would work. And it did, but now it's waaay too dated. That's my interpretation of it anyways =)
Anyone care to correct me? hehe
