Mortal Kombat vs. DC Embraces History of Violence, Will Include Fatalities

Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon dismissed speculation that Midway Chicago's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (360, PS3) would see the removal of the series' trademark fatalities to better integrate the DC Comics characters into the title.

"All of the MK characters and all of the DC villains will have fatalities," Boon told GameSpot. "The DC heroes who don't kill that often will have brutalities that will function just like fatalities but don't actually kill the opponent."

Midway Chicago previously announced that the game would be the first Mortal Kombat title to aim for a T for teen rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, prompting fans to voice concern over whether Midway Chicago was watering down the traditionally violent fighter series.

"I was surprised to see so many stories stating (with so much certainty) that the game wasn't going to have fatalities," added Boon. "In an odd sort of way, I was actually impressed to see how much passion the MK fans still have for the series. If they didn't care, you wouldn't have seen anywhere near the volume of discussion that came from the announcement."

Boon went on to reassure fans of the series that despite its lower rating, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe still contains blood effects, sound effects and animations that "are really pushing the T-rating envelope."

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall. Big thanks to Shacker valcan_s for the tip.
