Fallen Empire: Legions Open Beta Launches

The open beta for GarageGames' online shooter Fallen Empire: Legions, a spiritual sequel to Starsiege: Tribes, has launched on web portal InstantAction.com.

Prospective beta testers need only sign up for a free InstantAction account in order to get in on the action.

As in Tribes, Fallen Empire's major draw is its jetpack-based flight, which makes for a rather frenetic first-person shooter. The game supports up to 16 players on two maps, played in either deathmatch or capture-the-flag modes.

This reminds me that we need to have a Tribes 1 shackbattle somewhere sometime. The game's free to download and supports modern resolutions including widescreen with some file tweaking.

Ach. Tribes 2, with all the good bits left out. No weight, noise or satisfaction to the weapons, movement feels heavy and sluggish, lacking any decent acceleration or sense of velocity, and of course, no vehicles.. So no group tactics, no massed assaults.

No deployables, no support actions, sniping is impossible due to the delay present across the board on every server I've tried (beta perhaps, but sniping is quite literally broken against any target that is moving), nothing but the modern equivalent of Spinfusor duels, between fatman heavy classes, without any of the satisfying explosions, buzzes and screaming.

It's a good stepping stone to better things, but gods, I hope, but do not believe, the full version will be a lot different.

I really like the concept here and i played in the closed beta a bit. The mechanics are pretty well implemented even. The only real problem i had with it was the maps are way too small and there
not enough variety at the moment to hold my interest.

Once they get more, and hopefully larger, maps with more stuff to play around with
then this thing will be rockin.

I've been playing the closed beta on and off for a while now. The game has the core concepts down decently enough, but it's a definite work-in-progress. Once it has more advanced T2-style features and vehicles, we'll be talking.

Having played the closed beta for a while now, I can highly suggest this game to any and all Shackers. My only issue with it so far is how small it is in scope - number of maps, mapsize, limited amount of players per server. However, considering the Devs have promised regular content updates once this is launched fo realz, I don't think it's too far-fetched to assume that larger scale battles and vehicles will make their way in to the game later on.
