Alone in the Dark Features SecuROM Activation

Atari today announced that the PC version of the new Alone in the Dark game will ship with SecuROM activation. Compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista, the activation process means that following installation, you will have to go online to download an additional component that allows the game to run.

Once the game has been activated, you can play the game while offline. Uninstalling the game and revoking the serial number allows you to install the game on another computer. More information is available at aitdunlock.com.Already released in Europe, the Eden Games developed survival horror game will be released in North America next week for PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Wii.

All you self-righteous types who are refusing to buy games with DRM need to just GTFO and go to consoles (which are, ironically, much more confining and strict than PC DRM). If you're unable or unwilling to see that piracy is an existential threat to PC gaming, and that to keep PC gaming going some compromises must be made, you should leave. Don't profess your love for the PC and then in the same breath angrily justify it's destruction.

And to the pirates themselves, well, I spit in your face.

Bleh, I have been itching to upgrade my PC in order to get back into PC gaming like I used to be but all of these copy protection schemes, online activations, and DRM stories are keeping me away. I'll just keep buying games for consoles with the exception of PC exclusives.

Why even do it? Itll be cracked no matter what. Just like Mass effect. Just like Bioshock. Just like every game. Instead of using the same recycled method again and again, why not invest money in something that might actually work. Give it 24 hours or less and I gaurentee this game will be cracked.

Its a waste of time for devs, and a pain in the ass for gamers. Not to mention nothing new for crackers to get past.

The last thing any PC gamer wants is more useless apps running in the background hogging up system resources.
And whether or not you actually play pirated games, this is still blatantly and directly calling all gamers thieves. It's an insult, it's pointless, and it's wasted effort.

I don't have a problem with the online activition, Bioshock has it, mass effect has it and i own them all. but why i won't buy this game now even though i planned on it is because apparently you can only activiate it on ONE computer! i have 2 gaming pcs at home and always install the games on both, even bioshock/mass effect allows more than 1 activiation.

atari probably doesn't read this, but i just wanted to get the word out its not b/c the game sucks that i won't buy it, its because of only 1 activiation. quite silly.

My feeling on this is if you are a true PC gamer and a game comes out that you want...BUY IT!!! Your support will keep developers creating games. Piracy is greatly affecting PC gaming...anyone disagreeing with that is only fooling themselves. If developers stop making PC games it will be the PC gamers fault and not DRM.

Do these companies have plans on providing DRM-related customer service for these games years down the road or do they automatically assume we throw the games out after we finish them?
