these type of games interest me, but its so hard for me to get into them.

i remember playing FF:tactics on ps1 after playing FF7 and i couldn't get into it.
now years later i tried to get into it again and so far the only game that has really grabbed me is
jeanne d'arc on psp. I tried disgaea cuz everyone and their grandmother recommended it to me, but i ended up returning it.

are there any good tactical rpgs that are great for noobs of the genre?

Age of kings is awesome, and I'd say it fits in the genre, even if it is a mix of RTS and tactics

The original FF-tactics is still the best one out there if only for the story elements. The tactical play is still good, but not as advanced as some other tactics games that have come out since FF-tactics. If you couldn't get into it then, try again.

Honestly: if you couldn't get into FFT and Disgaea, I don't see how it could interest you. Those games stand out as some of the best in the genre.

FFT was my first tactical RPG and I loved it at firstsight. I don't think yout case is as much as being a "noob" on the genre, but more like there's something (repetition? stat padding? class tinkering? constant equipping?) that makes you not enjoy them. You may have to look into variations of the genre that better adhere to your expectations.

I also tried FFT and Disgaea but couldnt get into it. I tried the other Tactics on some portable system and couldnt finish that one either.

The thing is, I LOVE the original XCOM...

I can see what you mean, there isn't really any of these games that are "easy" to get into. It's the kind of games you really must *want* to play for real, cannot really explain why, but it just is. Been trying to get into them myself, I like the concept, the ideas and the whole shebang, it's just a of a heavy genre to get started into. Currently struggling with Front Mission DS, which I suck so bad at, that I sometimes wanna break furniture.
