Microsoft Executive Musical Chairs: Jeff Bell Departs, Shane Kim Promoted, Others Shifted
by Aaron Linde, Jun 12, 2008 1:10pm PDTMicrosoft Game Studio head Shane Kim has been promoted to the newly created role of vice president of strategy and business development, while interactive global marketing VP Jeff Bell has resigned, the company announced today.
Kim, who has served as the head of Microsoft Game Studios for over four years, will be tasked with building Microsoft's future partnerships and developing growth strategies in his new position. Former Microsoft Games Studios Europe manager Phil Spencer will assume Kim's responsibilities as head of Microsoft's worldwide publishing efforts.
Meanwhile, Jeff Bell has resigned to pursue opportunities outside of Microsoft after over two years in his position. The marketing VP gained recognition among consumers after appearing at several of the company's press events and conference keynotes.
"The time is right for me to pursue my life's passion of consumer brand marketing and the creative and services that drive it." Bell said. "Coming from automotive, and now technology and entertainment, I am excited to expand to new industries and categories."
Several members of Microsoft's interactive entertainment marketing team will carry on Bell's responsibilities while the company searches for a replacement.

He does a great job of keeping in touch with nearly everyone under his umbrella, to the point of knowing the first names of many of the rank and file by sight.
He is great at focusing on a market segment and working the products into those segments.
He's diplomatic enough that he can slip a dagger into his competition with a compliment.
He filled Ed Fries' shoes with ease, and I can't see him doing a bad job where he's going.
