Sony London Shelves Two PS3 Titles
by Aaron Linde, Jun 04, 2008 12:00pm PDTSony London Studios announced that it has suspended production on The Getaway and Eight Days, two of its upcoming PS3 titles.
According to Gamasutra, the studio cited an "incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles" which demanded a reallocation of the company's resources and budget as impetus for the cancellations. The games were axed following an internal review of all the studio's titles currently in development.
Announced alongside the PlayStation 3 at E3 2005, The Getaway was planned as the third installment of Sony's gangster flick-inspired action series, kicked off with two titles on the PS2. The third-person shooter and driving hybrid title Eight Days made its debut at E3 a year later.
The cancellations come not long after the appointment of Shuhei Yoshida as new president of Sony's worldwide game development studios. Yoshida replaced former executive Phil Harrison, who resigned to take up a position as president at Atari parent Infogrames.

Guess everyone went over to LBP, Killzone 2 and Motorstorm 2. Well good, if they can make a difference with these. I just don't understand the spinful exuberance they display over killing titles that perhaps a few folks were looking forward to playing.

It's a shame if they are not going to use the data they took so long collecting for the first two games (plus the PSP version) on a PS3 version. That could have been really good. I wonder if the problem was making the old assets work in high definition, or just down to gameplay? Seems like a lot to waste if it was the gameplay. The studio took years to collect all that data and make the first game, which kept being delayed and delayed and nobody though would ever come out.
I remember them saying at the time that they'd use the data for several future games to make the effort worthwhile. Real shame if that doesn't happen. I hope they've just scrapped the current game but will make something else out of it, whether or not it's part of the Getaway franchise (which I couldn't really give a shit about either way, TBH; just give me more stuff in London, please!).

Call me a cynic, but I'd say they never planned on releasing either.
