Free COD 4 Map Pack Hits PC June 5

The first downloadable map pack for Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will hit PCs on June 5, the developer has revealed.

Dubbed the Variety Map Pack, it brings four new multiplayer maps to the fold: Creek, Broadcast, Killhouse, and Chinatown, a remake of the classic CoD map Carentan.

Unlike the pack's earlier console releases, which sold for $10, the PC edition will be available for free thanks to a sponsorship from Nvidia.

"In addition to the map pack hitting, PC Players will be receiving the 1.6 Patch for the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare that will add support for the new maps, fix a server crash exploit recently reported by the community, and a few additional features / bug fixes," community manager Robert Bowling wrote on his blog.

pc gaming isn't free. all of the thousands of servers out there are paid for by clans and members of those clans, and companies trying to sell servers to clans. enjoy playing free of charge, but be assured somebody is paying the bill.

It's kind of tough to tell, but from screenshots and what I remember reading a few months ago...

The TV station is essentially converted from SP
The China map is a re-skinned Carenten
The warehouse is...a warehouse, probably crap like Shipment
And the other map is some actual new content

And people paid $10 for this on top of the $10 premium current-gen games carry? IW/Activision have sort've been bitches with the PC community about this so far and now they have nvidia paying the tab.

Its great to be a PC gamer but what happened to real free content. That's why I buy PC games. Now I hear that this content is "Sponsored" by Nvidia? Sounds like they don't have a model or market for micro-transactions on the PC and didn't want to piss off console fanboys who paid $10 for 4 maps because that's the model M$ set up for the xbox. I appreciate the love for PC gamers but come on....

Putting aside that $10 for 4 good maps isn't that much money, and that $7/month for the subscription isn't much either, but I wonder if console gamers will start getting irked a bit by the fact that PC is free and console very much isn't.
