Metal Gear Solid Creator Says Games, Movies to Merge into Single Medium

In a recent interview with Reuters, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said that with the advent of digital media, many forms of entertainment are likely to merge into a single medium.

"When entertainment becomes digital, there can be a great collaboration between games and other kinds of entertainment like movies or even novels," said Kojima. "All these things might form together to form a coherent medium."

As the director of the Metal Gear Solid series, Kojima has always incorporated elements of Hollywood films into his games, including lengthy, filmic cutscenes.

"I can't really predict precisely that this will happen in two or three years or whatever," he added. "But the trend is there, things are happening and I believe that convergence will happen sooner or later."

Well damn. Every MGS movie I have seen has put me to sleep. The moment they show the actual gameplay it looks so lame and unoriginal... as well.

...In Kojima's version though, they're not integrated as one. His version of convergence ships in a big box with an actual written novel, pair of DVD movies and a game. He's definitely pushed things forward in the gameplay arena, though, but isn't the guy to talk about pushing the interactive medium forward imo.

Or he probably just wants to direct a big budget action flick :P

It's scary how many people in the gaming buisness are completely disconnected from reality. I'd say that's wishful thinking on his part because that's the way he makes his games. I'd rather watch a movie, then play a game. The problem is when you want to be in the action and you have to sit through a long cutscene. It doesn't really matter if it's interesting or not if you want to be playing and not watching.
