Day of Defeat: Source Updated with New Map, Achievements, Other TF2 Features

A beta update for Valve's mod-turned-retail title Day of Defeat: Source (PC) has been announced, bringing a number of new additions to the World War II multiplayer shooter.

Included in the update are 51 achievements, player avatar support and detailed player statistics, along with a Team Fortress 2-style nemesis-revenge freeze cam and new particle effects that came out of TF2's development.

The update also brings with it a new map, dod_Palermo, said to be "a remix of the most popular community map, dod_salerno."

The beta client is currently available to Day of Defeat owners via Valve's online delivery platform Steam.

I just noticed CS:S Beta on the server list. It isn't on the Games list though, and there's no servers, but it seems to be an early indication that CS:S is getting the DOD:S treatment!

Damn, I was hoping for official dod_caen2 port. Also the unofficial Source Cherbourg has shaped up pretty good, and is ready for primetime IMO. Hope they'll add more maps incrementally in the future, and pay more attention to what custom mappers are achieving.

Palermo is a good start but this game definitely deserves more love. It's still pretty popular here in Old Continent in the midst of CoD4 frenzy, and I find my self going back for it every once in a while.

I doubt Salerno is any good, they only good maps isnt even available in the original anymore. 1 maybe 2 paths isnt any good except for players that need to find the enemy before they want their money back.

Did they ever add any good maps after release? I remember they only had 4 and only 1 and a half were actually playable outside of pubs. I say half because one was the stalematefest that was Donner and the other was a version of Anzio with a bunch of objects that just got in the way and slowed you down. Kalt was a fairly popular pub map, but Flash? That one was barely any fun no matter how you played it.

I honestly haven't played at all since a couple days after it came out (3 years now?) and realized that it was not even remotely close to the faster paced original DoD and promptly deleted my whole Steam folder in frustration, losing with it years of league demos and screenshots. Maybe I'll actually give it a shot again... probably not, but maybe. I'll have to wait until I see if they actually managed to revert the recoil and spray patterns back to how they were in the original to decide.

Great! Stop complaining about free shit. There are plenty of people who still rock Day of Defeat and they want those people to move over to Day of Defeat: Source. Interest in WW2 isn't going to disappear over night just because Call of Duty 4 left for the modern world. Hey check it out, incidentally, Call of Duty 4 is on SALE at STEAM! Looks like Valve has got you covered, whether you like WW2 or prefer modern combat. Valve is genius.

Plus, people did pay for the game (like, uh, me) and this is Valve and although they do take their time, everything they deliver is gold and worth waiting for.

shit. servers are way too lagged. i joined one of the groups of servers with the lowest pings and actual players on it and the admin threw on melee only combat for all. :( really hard to shoot at something too but maybe im too picky :(
