Resident Evil 5 to Sport 2P Co-op, Cover System

25
Capcom's latest entry in the Resident Evil franchise will sport drop-in, drop-out online cooperative play throughout the entire campaign, according to a now-removed GamesRadar preview.

A cover system will be incorporated into the control mechanics for the first time in the franchise's history, allowing players to "lock to a wall and fire around the corner." A dodging mechanic in the style of Clover's God Hand, which used the right analog stick for quick movement, will also be featured.

Expected at some unspecified point in 2009, Resident Evil 5 (PS3, 360) pairs series lead Chris Redfield with an unnamed female mercenary as they investigate the root of all zombie-kind.

When another player is not present, the other character will be AI-controlled. The game will separate the duo at points, a la Gears of War, and sport more open areas than previous RE titles.

The preview further confirmed that the Mercenaries mini-game, a challenge mode first featured in Resident Evil 3 and refined in the fourth title, will return in RE5.

No, a cover system for RE would turn the game into a "take cover" game, and not a "kill zombies" game.

Cover for fucking zombies? I bet most of them won't even have guns.

I think a cover mechanics are fine if they are implemented well. Gears of War had a lot of finding cover, and penalized you for going guns blazing. GTA4 also had cover mechanic, but you could still go in Rambo style if you wished. If RE offers the latter optional to gameplay cover system, I'm all for it.

Yeah. What are you taking cover from in Resident Evil? Hatchets?

I don't have anything against cover systems, but that seems like a strange mechanic to wedge into the RE series.

          Co-op sounds great, though.

Publishers are more on board now too, which makes it easier to pitch coop ideas.

This game is perfect for that type of co-op. I can't wait!

I still like co-op but the novelty wore off a bit. I'm still a single player guy.
