James Cameron: True 3D Gaming Is the Future, Already in Upcoming Avatar Game

Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron believes that the future for gaming and entertainment lies with stereoscopic displays, which create the illusion of depth by supplying each eye with a slightly altered image.

"Stereo production is the next big thing," Cameron said during a lecture at Microsoft's Advance 08 Conference, according to CNET.

"You are in the game. This is the ultimate immersive media," he continued, noting the importance of such a concept with a first-person shooter.

Cameron revealed that the Ubisoft-developed Xbox 360 game adaptation of his upcoming 3D flick Avatar currently sports stereoscopic imagery via 3D glasses. However, he pointed out that there are certain displays that don't require special glasses to get the effect.

It's far from the first time a game has made use of specialized 3D glasses. Examples date all the way back to the Square's Rad Racer on NES, with more recent 3D-capable titles including Sucker Punch's Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves (PS2), Konami's Contra: Legacy of War (PSX), and Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Acid 2 (PSP).

"When you are viewing in stereo, which is what we do, more neurons are firing. More blood is pumping through the brain, Cameron concluded. "We are born seeing in three dimensions. Most animals have two eyes and not one. There is a reason I think."
