some people play at whatever their desktop is. Also some like to be cool and play 800x600 for cs since those 3d guys played at that.

For CS 1.6, I still swear by 640x480. I definitely notice a difference in recoil and headshot registration. While it might just "feel" different, you'll find a lot of the best CS players use extremely low resolutions.

      Athon 3000+
      NVIDIA 7800 GS
      1 gig of memory
      Onboard sound

In TF2, that gives me ~25 fps in combat at 800x600. So 800x600 it is.

B-but why? It looks damn sexy in widescreen @16x10 with all the eye-candy cranked to the max w/AA+AF, and it still runs at >300fps average on my rig, which isn't even that new (X2 4200+ @2.7GHz, 8800GTS 512).

Visual clutter that only gets in the way when you need to see and hit people as fast as possible, that's why.

I can see that ...and perhaps it explains my lousy Q3A skillz, but I do like the added peripheral vision I get in ws with a 105 fov, though.

How the low resolution is lowering the visual clutter?

I run all my games at 1440x900 on my cheap 8600GT. What is wrong with these people? go buy an 8600 for less than 100 roobucks.
