EA: Keep Comparing Battlefield Heroes to TF2

by Chris Faylor and Nick Breckon, May 14, 2008 12:54pm PDT

Every time that EA DICE's free multiplayer shooter Battlefield Heroes (PC) is mentioned, someone always brings up its similarity to the artistic stylings of Valve's multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2.

You'd think it would get a little grating after a bit, but Heroes producer Aleksander Grondol sure doesn't mind. In fact, he seems proud of the comparisons between Heroes and Valve's J.C. Leyendecker-inspired efforts.

Battlefield Heroes (Left), Team Fortess 2 (Right)

"If they want to keep comparing it to TF2, I think that's perfectly okay," Grondol told Shacknews in an interview. "It's an honor to be compared to a great game like Team Fortress 2, and I think the art style in TF2 is awesome."

"We're obviously not trying to take anything from TF2 in terms of gameplay," he continued. "I think once you actually start playing it and see the difference for yourself, then it becomes quite apparent that it's not TF2."

Shacknews editor Nick Breckon seems to concur. His recent impressions suggest the gameplay of Battlefield Heroes borrows more from World of Warcraft's than Team Fortress 2.

Then again, with Grondol egging people on, it doesn't seem likely that those comparisons are going to stop anytime soon. But with the free-to-play game slated to premiere sometime this summer, maybe, just maybe, those critics will find something else to occupy their time.

  • OK guys, this is getting ridiculous. You know what this is like? Its like saying that every ultra-realistic 3D shooter out there looks the same. "Oh my god, Unreal Tournament III copied off of Ghost Recon AW 2! Look, both games feature fully 3D models and extremely detailed environments! Whatever shall we do?" Gimme a break. You people have to seriously lighten up. When a new graphic design technique comes out (and works well) of course you're going to see that technique used in a slew of other games that attempt to experience the same success as the original, as well as games that attempt to be better (or completely different) than the original. But that is NOT a bad thing. Give developers a chance for once and base your opinions not only on how it looks, but how it plays. Don't tell me UT3 copied GoW just because they used the same engine.

  • There's a lot of debate going on about BF:Heroes copying TF2's style (and even some people saying TF2 copying other styles, such as PIXAR). But there's a fundamental fact people don't seem to be remembering: Valve took an extremely scientific approach to the style in order to create easily-distinguishable classes.

This video highlights the process and justifications for the decisions they made. The style plays both an aesthetic and game-play role in distinguishing classes and providing relevant info to the player. Secondly, it's not just the style of TF2 that made it charming, but also the fact that they created characters from the classes, evident in the "Meet the ______ " videos. Finally, many games still opt for purely photorealistic or non-photorealistic effects. TF2's style s an interesting blend of photo and non-photo realistic elements that pretty unique.

If you look at BF:Heroes, you see no distinguishing styles between characters. The style is solely aesthetic. The developers weren't concerned as much with portraying subtle cues visually as much as creating an all-encompassing light-hearted impression with the game. There's pretty little doubt that they were at least somewhat inspired by TF2, but they aren't copying the style so much as copying the idea to blend photorealistic and non-photorealistic elements.

The comparison to PIXAR, or more importantly The Incredibles, is silly. The characters in the Incredibles are more highly stylized, less anatomically correct than TF2. Just because the heavy has a big chin like Mr. Incredible does not mean they were copied. Chins are typically one of the most exaggerated features in a caricature, and typically implies power and dominance. Saying Valve copied PIXAR solely based on that feature, and frankly there are few if any other similarities, is silly.

  • Obviously TF2 was very successful and fun...

In most cases, this is when stuff gets copycatted. Oh, and I am not saying there is anything wrong with that.

How bout a variety of games that are successful and fun? It is going to be FREE so we shouldn't even be ARGUING.

I can't even COUNT how many games I THOROUGHLY enjoyed that copied something else. The game they 'copied' was fun, so why not?

Also, it has vehicles and it is free... OMG THEY COPIED THE ART STYLE... yeah? The art style is highly appreciated by lots of people and lots of people love it.. what is the problem here?
