I was looking at a Samsung 19" WS, for $199, but I'm open to suggestions. Ideally I'd like one with a glossy screen like my macbook, but I can't seem to find one in the 19" range.

I was all set to build a fileserver from some parts I got from a friend, but then I found out that this particular motherboard doesn't support RAID (Intel DP965LT, even though the chipset says it does, which caused me to be misled: http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/Dp965lt/index.htm )
So, I'm wondering what to do now, and it occurred to me that maybe I should just get a Windows Server license (Or use XP) and run Software-based RAID 5. I'll have Three 500gb drives to begin with, and they're just sitting here until I figure out what to do with this business.
Bonus Question: is it possible to add drives to the array without rebuilding it?

This is an ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC spoiler. Do not even check the replies if you have NOT SEEN THE END CREDITS ROLL or have not received the achievement “You have won!”. I consider this fair warning.
I have a big ass question to ask regarding the end of the game. In reply...
I respect that everyone posting in reply will use spoiler tags as well.

Old Man's War is the first book in the series, and I have to say it blew me away. I absolutely love this series, and it's pace is refreshing and quick. Any fans of Heinlein or Richard K Morgan should do themselves a favor and give this series a whirl.
The series is intensely action oriented, sarcastic (fucking hilarious at some points), and at the same time completely believable in its technology.
Anyone else read this series? Also, has anyone else read Bright of the Sky by Kay Kenyon, as it's the next sci-fi series that has my interest piqued.
Too many good books, not enough god damn time... Malazan is tempting me, but after painfully waiting for Martin to finish Song of Ice & Fire, I'm going to wait for Erikson to finish the series before I start.

So apparently there is a free fan DVD coming out. Some of the footage is incredible.
Check it out here: http://www.theworldisdaft.com/player.htm
I can't believe the quality of some of those clips.
If you haven't seen why so many shackers where raving about having seen them, check it out here.
I am not sure how it will be release when done, but it looks like amaziig work if you read the about in the main page.

I'm not in the beta but I hear from everyone in open beta that it runs terrible. I barely make the minimum requirements posted in Gamestop, but the game looks fun. I think I'm going to have to wait for a demo or pass on this one unless I hear good news from closed beta testers:(

PvE 56% 35
FFA-PvP with a Shack Guild 37% 23
FFA-PvP joinng with the Goons 8% 5
35 Players for PvE is perfectly viable for a PvE game and PvP mini-games. You will have trouble doing borderland PvP vs the larger guilds.
23 Players for a Shack guild on the FFA PvP server is at the lower end for a viable guild on a FFA server where the other guilds are like to number anywhere from 50 to the hundreds.
5 People indicated they prefer to play with the Goons, a smart choice considering they will likely have hundreds of members.
Even incorrectly assuming the 5 people who choose to play with the goons would switch over to a shack run guild, that only gives you 28 people to play on a full time FFA server of which only a handfull will ever be online at one time. My suggestion to those who insist on PvP would be to throw your lot in with the Goons and have a much better time of it. 23-28 people is not a viable number for a FFA PvP guild in my opinion.
If everyone concerned consented to one server, we'd have 63 members on one server, something to consider. This would probably only happen with those who choose the FFA server join the current majority on a PvE.
If you plan to play and haven't done so, vote NOW.

Last night I came home from buying my new TV (Vizio 37" LCD 720p), and as I walk in the front door I hear my roommate from the kitchen say "Are you squeamish?"
"No, not really, what's up?"
I walk into the kitchen and there she is, sitting on the floor next to the dishwasher. A rat body about 8 inches long sticking out from underneath the cabinets. Apparently she left the sliding doors open because it was nice weather, which is bullshit because it rained all day, and a rat got in and wedged its head between the dishwasher and cabinet. It was dead when I arrived.
"Can you pull it out? I've tried but you're probably much stronger than I am."
"Sure, I'll give it a shot."
So I put on gloves and wrapped my fingers around it. This is an experience you cannot prepare yourself for... grabbing onto the dead body of a rat getting ready to pull as hard as you can... YANK!
I tore the body off the head.. leaving the head still wedged against the dishwasher and cabinets. I spent the next hour with pair of pliers pulling out chunks of the head. Ripping off skin, ears, and teeth off until finally I got a good grip on the skull crunched it out.
My roommate cleaned up the mess.

The Pope's chief astronomer says that life on Mars cannot be ruled out.
I didn't know the Pople had his own astronomer. Given the Catholic church's position towards science that seems a bit like being Hitler's rabbi oh yes i just went there
What do you think it is?

I just wanted to say GTA4 for 360 is SOOOOOOOO much better than on PSN holllllly shit.
PSN I log on, grind to rank 4-5 in a night (players are terrible on PSN), log off, come back the next day and I'm rank 0. Repeat x20
I said fuck it and bought it for 360. Grinded to r4 in an hour. (will keep grinding tonight).
The players on XBL are so much better, communication is so much better (everyone has mics wow) and the fps are actually better (wtf?)

SICHUAN PROVINCE, China (CNN) -- China's death toll from a massive earthquake soared by thousands Wednesday as troops rushed to plug "severe cracks" in a dam upriver from one of the hardest hit cities.

About 2,000 troops were sent to work on a dam near the epicenter of Monday's earthquake, state-run media reported.
The Zipingpu dam, upriver from Dujiangyan in Sichuan province, was in "great danger," the Xinhua news agency reported.
China.org said that the 7.9-magnitude earthquake had caused "severe cracks" in the dam.
The "plant and associated buildings have collapsed and some are partly sunk," it said of the hydropower station.
The Ministry of Water Resources said that an irrigation system and Dujiangyan City -- which has a population of about 630,000 -- "would be swamped," if major problems emerged at the dam, China.org said.

So Viscy made a thread earlier trying to gather plans for launch. Unfortunately it seems like there's a decent split between those of us who want to join a PvE server, and those who want FFA PvP. So in order to get the ball rolling...
If you plan on playing on a PvE server, post here and lets discuss our plans. - After seeing the clusterfuck that is FFA PvP in open beta, there's no way I'm doing a FFA PvP. Considering the different mini-games and Borderlands was all I was interested in for PvP anyway, I don't think I'll miss GankFest08.
Personally, my ultimate goal for this game is Guild City + participation in Border Kingdoms/lands. It all feels like 3d Ultima Online to me (we always seiged a huge PK guild north of Minoc, and played a lot of Seige Perilous), so I've got a raging clue for this. I'd love to get a Shack guild going that has like-minded goals. What say you?
