Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, May 12, 2008 6:00pm PDTSomething we've sorely lacked around these parts for no apparent good reason is a
better interface for people to share and interact with their gaming library. We have this
huge database of thousands of games that you guys never get to mess around with. So
Maarten and I are going to try and change that. We're hoping to put together over the next
couple of weeks a bit of an open beta of the Shacker game library system. The hope is that
you'll be able to share all of your gaming interests and achievements but more
interestingly compare and see statistics from the thousands of other Shackers. What game
is owned by the most Shackers? What % of Shackers were dumb enough to buy Black &
White and will admit it? Important questions that need answers!
- New iPhone
href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/05/12/iphone.sold.out.ap/index.html">approaches
! - New Blackberry able
to compete
? - The social mess
- Mommy blogger is
bloggin
As for the the videogame news around these parts for today:
- Gears of War 2 footage
- Banjo Kazooie 360 screenshots
- Viva Pinata 2 screenshots
- Skate 2 announced
- A ton of Ninja Gaiden 2 character
videos
- BlizzCon 2008 announced
- LucasArts hates PC gamers
- Rockstar Head talks some crazy
stuff
- Microsoft rumors
- EA buys Napster dude project
Lastly, if you are morbidly curious in my html and css butchery I'll probably start
sharing within the comments in the next day or two some laughable concepts of what the
Shacker library will look like. If this project proves popular though we'll try and hire
some web developers with actual talent. Oh, and yes we'll seriously look at open standards
and OpenID etc. in the future.

If you want to break his brain [ed: an opponent of evolution] with some awesomely detailed but easy to digest evolutionary science aimed at demonstrating the strength of evolution to its opponents - dare him to watch all of these videos in order: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=potholer54&p=r
From 1, to 11.
Start with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg1fs6vp9Ok #1 - the history of the universe made easy.
The guy who makes them has a masters/phd in geology/earth sciences, so has a strong grounding in the fossil record, and the history of the earth based on geological evidence. But his job is as a science reporter based in Australia for various news radio stations nationally and internationally. He keeps his identity relatively close to his chest - so as not to offend some of his radio listeners it seems.
His videos are the most inspiring, accessible, and comprehensive overview of the science of evolution from the big bang to now that it's really quite inspiring and educational for people who thought they knew most of what there was worth knowing about evolution. The sheer amount of evidence there is to support evolution these days is really surprising - once you get through all of those videos.
The chap who makes these videos seems to be quite a credible scientific source - I've chatted with him over mail and he's a pretty cluey and friendly guy.

Ordering room service - $20 per "platter" PLUS tax, plus $2 delivery, plus 19% service charge. Now do I tip the guy that brings it up or is that the service charge? Can I expense the tip?
Also being in a foreign country in a different timezone on your own is lonely as hell. I can't even talk to my friends on IM because they are all asleep.
ALSO WTF $10 a day for internet in my room and the best I can download at is 19k/sec!?

How many people are going for the early access? Currently downloading the client at a whopping 200kbps with a 6 day estimate until finishing.
Are Shackers wanting an FFA PVP server? or a typical PVE server?
Like some people, I haven't gotten my early access email with a download link. But to save time, here's a direct link to the downloaders (Pay attention to the link, one is US and the other is EU):

Out of all of them, I think 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are some of the best. They actually take themselves seriously, unlike almost all other zombie films. Is there anything else out there thats similar?

They've made a lot of good improvements over last season, looks like they listened to feedback. They got rid of all the crappy stuff in the elminiator (barrel roll thing) and changed up assault to make it much more interesting.
Plus two new female gladiators who are holy mother of god hot. Jet was the female winner last season and she was pretty cute, but holy shit she looks amazing now.
Anyone else watching?

What the hell is wrong with my video card. On a website with a black background, there are all these little colored pixels, that when I move the window around, draw little circles and lines. When playing TF2, there's graphical artifacting.
Example : http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4350/graphicalwtfgt2.jpg
What the hell is going on? I'm monitoring temps and they're sitting at 50C idle, and around 70C under load, which after googling around doesn't seem too hot for a 7900GT. It's underclocked, I tried to make the problem go away but it didn't work.
New drivers help this, maybe? I'm running 171.somethings. HALP

But has anyone noticed the dramatic incline in programs/applications wanting your attention constantly for no real purpose other than to remind you who they are?
I've started noticing an influx of games, especially new releases, creating directories in places they shouldn't be; such as 'My Documents'.
I mean when did applications become such vanity whores? I know this has been gradual, its started around the same time video card drivers started forcing you to have their useless app, sucking up resources just to run in your system tray. Now, every-fucking program tries this...
Have developers simply stopped caring about quality? or are they simply feeling like they're losing to popular Trojan and ad-ware apps who need to constantly run?
I'm tired of having to manually disable your pseudo system component, that used to run out of my program files directory ONLY when needed. And I'm tired of getting you out of my registry...please stop.

I've been pissing about in Windows Movie Maker, putting together montages to music and compiling some of my mobile phone videos, but was wondering if there's anything free out there that has a bit more functionality. I made this the other day from some pics I took on a stag;

This is the sort of thing I'll be making I guess, maybe mixing in some video. I've got Virtualdub, but thats more for editing video files, as opposed to making things from it.

I kick myself for never seeing them while he was alive but I will blast "Human" and "Individual Thought Patterns" all day at work. As a guitarist he was very influential for me in my early stages of playing.
Any fans of his here?

Real estate photography.
They use the lamest pictures on the real estate sites. And in this market those pictures are key. We're window shopping at the moment and it amazes me the poor quality of the pictures they use for these sites. I mean simply in the composition, balance, framing, whatever.
I google'd a bit for such a thing in the Orange County area and didn't see much of it, and I definitely didn't see much in use on the real estate sites. Think there's any market for something like that? Agent puts in $150 for two dozen decent pictures of their property?
Probably not worth my time, but seems like it might be fun and struck me as an idea sitting in traffic this morning.
