by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, May 09, 2008 11:16pm PDTHowdy Shackers, shall we take this to a fresh chatty? So last night we got the latest installment of the Gibson-Goldstein Index, giving you our lowdown on the week's events, for better or worse. And then I've got the results for our latest contest, that being for R-Type Command so give that a look to see if you're a winner. Oh and hey how about that Gears of War 2 trailer?

and unfortunately, i dont really like cave story.
so what's a good lightweight game i can play that won't need that much cpu power?
bonus points if it has either a isometric view or can cure my wing commander lust.

I don't see enough Shackers who have committed to attending OverloadUT's send-off into the rough-seas of marriage. For those who haven't noticed, there will be free food and questionable entertainment. All you need to do is show up to San Rafael or Novato for this one-night-only will-not-be-repeated event.
Sign-ups are here: http://www.shacknews.com/shackmeet/events.x?id=4840 or read the full event description, provided by OverloadUT's brother, Dan, in reply.

So twice last night my PC locked up, once in the middle of CoH, and again in the middle of TF2.
In both cases, it locked up the exact same way - screen goes black - monitor loses connection and thus switches into energy saver mode.
Keyboard is unresponsive, as is the soft-reset on the case. Holding in the power button for 4 seconds will shut it down.
What say you shack?

So here's the "Game launches in less than a week post".
Pre-Access opens on Saturday, May 17th (costs you $5.00) with the main game launch happening on Tuesday, May 20th. If the Shack is wanting to play together in an organized manner, it's probably time to make a few decisions.
The biggest, and most important, is what kind of server do we wish to play on. AoC has 3:
PvE
PvP - Free for All
Role Playing PvP - Free for All.
Now, it should be noted that ALL servers have PvP mini-games and organized PvP in the "borderlands" were player cities are built. Choosing a "PvE" server doesn't mean you wont get Pvp, not by a longshot. It simply means you can play a larger portion of the game without worrying about player combat unless you choose to go to those areas.
Another important distinction to make about AoC PvP is that it's FFA. This means there are no factions, PvP can take place anywhere outside the major cities with just about anyone. People use to the WoW brand of "Faction" PvP may be in for a rude surprise if they expect the same here.
This weekend was a full FFA PvP weekend and it gave everyone a good look at what that means. Life is short and brutal, etc. If you think questing was hard in a PvP faction game like WoW, it's going to be much harder and paranoid in AoC. Some people will like this, some won't. If you played Shadowbane. Eve or Asherons Call on Darktide, this might be right up your alley, if not, you might want to skip it. Your focus will be more on staying alive than anything else.Just an FYI.
Personally, I'm of the opinion that if they didn't offer PvP mini games and borderlands, I'd probably choose the PvP server without much hesitation. I like PvP sometimes, but I'm certainly not so into it that it becomes the focus of my gameplay. Because they *do* offer PvP options in a mainly PvE environment, I'm much more comfortable going that route if people want to. In theory the full blown PvP sounds great, but in practice I'm not sure I'd have time for the frustration and shift of focus away from other game elements to really enjoy it.
Having said that, I think the key to having a decent guild is going to be playing together, so I'll go with what everyone else wants. So if your planning on playing with other Shackers, cast your vote here and lets make a final decision on the server type. The server names should be out soon, the voting on them is almost complete. The last time we discussed this, it was pretty much agreed that if we do choose a PvP server, it would be a less crowded one this time around..
That leaves us with one more thing...The guild name!
GCR is always an option, but personally I think after WoW and the various years of inter-guild drama, something new might be more fun. My favorite suggestion so far, "Kha'ak Rising"
Sounds like somekind of obscure, foreign God until you realize that "Kha'ak" will be pronounced "Cock Rising". The field is wide open on this one, so make some suggestions.
If there's a real split between people wanting to go PvE vs PvP, I supposed it's doable to have two guilds, but remember a larger guild would probably be better.

I had XM for a couple years up until about a year ago. I liked it pretty well, there was a decent variety of music on the various stations enough that I could almost always find something to listen to. My receiver was stolen and I decided to cancel my subscription rather than just get a new receiver. I'm getting sick of listening to the same MP3s over and over now. I think it's time to pick it back up, so the question becomes:
XM or Sirrius?
I don't give a shit about sports, I don't give a shit about O&A, I don't give a shit about Stern. I pretty much just want it for tunes. Anyone that's had both and can say which service had the better equipment? I just had an original Roadie on XM and it worked pretty well. I liked being able to mark songs and it tell me when they were playing.
At this point I'm sort of leaning towards XM because their equipment seems a little less expensive.

Doom 3 - IMHO better than Riddick, better than FEAR, much better than Bioshock (even has better graphics and better sound), but not as good as HL2. There I had to say it.
