        EPIC HATES PC GAMERS ROOAAR

There was a contingent of the PC gaming population that practically worshiped Epic and their upcoming UT2007 UT3. Epic could do no wrong. Then the unthinkable happened.....they did wrong by releasing a lackluster, consolized, buggy entry into their flagship series. Then, to add insult to injury, various talking heads at Epic lambasted PC gamers in general for not welcoming their new, less stellar product as the second coming of PC gaming (and of course blaming it on piracy). Now Epic has moved over to console-centric development, eschewing their roots and ignoring the community that has supported them from their infancy.

        TL;DR
They don't like PC gamers anymore, so some PC gamers don't like them.

news to me, UT3 was awesome, not buggy, not consolized. I've also yet to see them "lambast" PC gamers in general. and I have yet to hear them blame it all on piracy. I also have yet to see them move over to console centric development. and also their roots mean shit, seriously they are a gaming company, this roots thing is pathetic and hilarious at the same time.

look for comments by Mark Rein (I think). They've said more than a few things that pissed of PC elitists but its all pretty dumb backlash from the hardcore PC crowd

My post was actually semi sarcastic. I know they have said things that have pissed off pc elitist, but they definitely haven't said the things these people are claiming. Also it was comments from Tim Sweeney, and Cliffy as well. they basically said "Hey there are some problems with pc gaming, piracy is a pretty big issue, and integrated graphics are fucking things up, we should find a way to fix this" and people took it as "Piracy is why UT3 did "bad", we make more money on consoles so lets just do that" yet they never really said that.

I personally just find the epic hate unbelievable. It's like the shack moves from company to company to hate for dumb reasons.

Ok, perhaps I overstated things a little. It remains that after Gears sold all those millions of copies, Epic is of course putting their primary focus on console gaming. PC gaming can't compete with those numbers, even without the threat of piracy.

And though I've never worshiped at the altar of Epic, I have enjoyed their previous products. I could not get into UT3 at all.....it felt "off" for several reasons. It was pretty easy to see the writing on the wall when Gears sold all those millions of copies. Yes, they are a gaming company, and companies like making money. I don't hate Epic, and I'm still looking forward to Gears 2. It's just sad to see PC game developers continue to shift their focus away from the platform in favor of the console riches.

Ok well to clarify then: Epic never complained about the sales of UT3. Indeed it was the opposite: the media fixated on poor sales, but Epic were the ones claiming they were satisfied with the numbers they were seeing given UT3's potential lifetime sales.

They've admitted simultaneous PC and UT3 development hurt the game, and that for example they completely fucked up the game's UI:

                  http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=17591

Finally the story about UE3 targeting consoles first is meaningless, given that (in Rein's words) UE3 did the same:

" But people took that as [a sign of] us abandoning PCs - and Tim said something about UE4 coming to consoles first. Unreal Engine 3 came out on consoles first - there's nothing new about that. "

                  http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=187565

Oh and does this make it seem like they're not committed to PC?

"Oh yeah. Hey, Cliff is Cliff, and he's making a console game, and that's what he's focused on, so that's what his thinking is all about. But as a company, we make PC games. We love the PC, it's our heritage, we want to see it be strong, and we want to sell games like Unreal Tournament III and Gears of War on PC, and have them sell as well as they do on console."

                  http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=93420&page=2

I agree though that the 360/PS3 is probably their primary focus, but at the same time they still believe in the PC platform, and I'm sure will try and do a better job with the next UT game if there is one.

I'm a Linux gamer. Oxymoronic I know. So obviously I dual boot. But as many games as I can run on Linux, I do. They said UT3 would be one of those games. Many months later, it isn't. So there's my reason. Obviously that's not a reason for your mainstream PC gamer, but it is one for me.

UT3 was delayed for a year only to be released with a consolized UI that sucked and a server browser that barely worked. Also, the dedicated server support for server admins sucked. I really do not understand how you can do that with a multiplayer game. When the demo was first released the server list was full of listen servers because people had to figure out the dedicated server with no help from Epic and no README existed. And you couldn't filter by dedicated servers. A lot of people were hyped for the game and then were turned off by the demo. They've patched the game and such, but all that was really unexpected from Epic and left some bad taste, and I think there's still some withstanding issues.

Oh and GoW PC had an issue where some people's saved games would automatically be deleted. There was a big thread on the Epic forums about it and it took them a long time to even acknowledge it if I remember correctly.

I wish both gamers and developers would stop mentally segregating PC and console gamers.

From the developer point of view:

Maybe the main problem isn't piracy but that many of the console customers ARE THE SAME PEOPLE and don't want to buy two copies of the same game. There are more console sales and less PC sales over the years and devs keep blaming piracy when piracy has always existed (though is arguably easier now that any fool can use Bit Torrent).

Judging by what I myself have done, and what I see happening with my friends and people on the Shack, I would say a significant reason for the sales migrating to the consoles is that many of the customers themselves have migrated to them. They are easier to use and require less of an up-front outlay and, mouse input and Crysis aside, you usually get pretty much the same game, often earlier and with more built-in features (Xbox Live). So it's not surprising that many "PC gamers" now prefer to buy console games. Fewer PC sales and more console sales, but it's the same customers! The overall games market hasn't lost a customer there; it hasn't gained one either. There seems to be a lot of miscounting going on, IMO.

From the gamer point of view:

When are we going to get over the stupid sense of entitlement about being "PC gamers"?

"Shit man, I'm so pissed off because this Bionic Commando sequel is coming out for the Xbox 360 and that company are totally shitting all over their NES/C64/Arcade roots! They owe it to us to make that game for the platform we bought the previous one on 20 years ago!"

Man the shack is fickle when it comes to companies. For all the words tossed around in the chatties, I expected everyone to have thicker skins. ;)

Keep in mind that almost all of what you read comes from a single voice there. There are a lot of people with varying views at Epic - particularly as Marks words are likely aimed at marketing/potential licensees as much as they are at the public.

It took a year for this?
