Prototype Delayed to 2009

Radical Studios' open-world action title Prototype has been delayed to an unspecified 2009 release date, GameSpot reports.

The game was originally scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC this coming fall.

"Since its announcement, Prototype has been regarded by many as groundbreaking and taking the open-world genre in new directions, and in the simplest explanation possible, we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create," said publisher Sierra Entertainment.

Yeah, wonder how many other games need to be totally redone post-GTA IV.

      I wonder if they'll re-open co-op.

        LOL, my thoughts exactly.

"Geez Bill, have you played GTA 4 yet? Wow this is way better than our game."
"Aw crap, back to the 'ole drawing board."

Though, realistically, I am not really sure why these guys would be worried about GTA. From the footage they showed off it seems they are not aiming for the mob mission / gang angle type game play; that is to say they have a unique take on an open world game that isn't in direct competition with GTA. If their core mechanics are fun, then I think people will overlook their technical short-comings (if that is indeed what they are worried about).

Volition Inc. on the other hand, with Saints Row being in DIRECT competition with GTA, might as well pack up their offices now.

It's the Saints Row guys that need to review right now.

Well the storyline is really weak and GTAIV provided a really good storyline with choices. It was nice to customize your character but you were just a blank observer otherwise.

History has proven though, that most stories don't mean shit.

And most of the stories are just cliched rip-offs of either pop-culture, or old movies.

          Agreed, competition is good.

SR was a good time, and for volition's first run on the 360 with a sandbox game, they did a fine job.

Prototype and Crackdown would be a better comparison - though I don't believe RTW is pursuing a crackdown 2, instead they are heading full-bore with APB.

Saints Row was, at best, a next gen GTA 3.

Yea... I'm not so sure about this. SR2 could still be a blast if they can address the MP gameplay items - the little things:

        Connectivity
        Mini-games being functional
Weapons that have some depth to them (satchel charges being stuck to people - damn near instant buy just for that)
        Ranked MP that isn't retarded.
Sure graphics wise it looks like shit compared to GTA iv, but as we all know, gameplay > graphics.

SR2 still has co-op by design, whereas so much of the MP in GTA iv seems tacked on - imo.

I'm sure this is a factor but having watched the recent video it still didn't look like it was all there anyway. There's a ton of potential to this one so hopefully the time pays off.
