Valve Releases Steamworks SDK
by Nick Breckon, May 01, 2008 1:25pm PDTIndependent developer Valve today announced the release of its Steamworks software development kit, a set of free tools that will allow PC game developers to add a number of supporting services to their products.
The list of features includes product key authentication, copy protection, auto-updating, social networking, matchmaking, and anti-cheat technology.

Even though I prefer my games out of steam installed old skool I think Steam is the only hope of saving PC gaming amid the current plague.

Does this means people can publish games on Steam free of charge, or just that they can use some of the API to deploy their own services from their own servers? And that "Steamworks publishing services" is a further option?
