Final Galactic Civilizations II Expansion Blasts Off

Stardock today launched the last expansion to its 4X strategy PC series Galactic Civilizations II.

The Twilight of the Arnor expansion pack boasts improved graphics, unique tech trees for each race, a host of new features, and solar system-smashing Terror Stars.

The game is available for purchase on Stardock's website for $29.95, but requires the first Dark Avatar expansion to run. A GalCiv II Ultimate bundle, including the original game and both expansions, is also available for $59.95.

In what was have the racial tech trees been reworked? One thing that drove me nuts is that so many of the tech advances are just little incremental things. Three or four laser techs that don't do anything but make them a little smaller, then again for plasma weapons, etc.

It's not so bad if it's a tech series that doesn't even have major improvements (i.e., the support tree), but it's kind of a pain for things like the weapon and engine techs.

This is the kind of deep, fun game that you don't seem to find (at least not very often, if at all) on consoles. GO STARDOCK, GO! :)

Can I ask a dumb question here? Why can't I play the original campaign from Twilight of the Arnor? Why do I have to switch back to the old and busted Dread Lords to start at the beginning of the story? There is a campaign menu that lets you choose a campaign, but it only has one option.

The feature list of this expansion pack is staggering. It could've been a sequel. Might have to check it out now that the tech trees are finally less bland.
