Video Teases GTA 4 Animation Technology
by Chris Faylor, Apr 25, 2008 12:58pm PDTWhen it arrives next Tuesday, Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) will be the first retail game to feature NaturalMotion's euphoria animation technology.
In advance of the title's release, NaturalMotion sent over a video demonstrating how the real-time animations of the euphoria engine differ from other solutions, such as ragdoll physics.
The euphoria technology is also being utilized the physics-intensive PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of LucasArt's Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as well as NaturalMotion's own football game Backbreaker (PS3, X360).

But is there an option to NOT have them so loosely walk and get bumped as if they were drunk or had the downs?

Each of the "behaviors" is a keyframed animation clip, Euphoria simply layers ragdoll physics on top of them in order to make each "reaction" slightly different.
This is straight from my buddy at lucasarts, who isn't selling a product but tells it from a user's point of view.

No software program can make a character magically walk, respond, in a simulative realistic manner compared to humans without some form of input. Currently it merely touches the surface. It needs INPUT and interpolation using metahistorical (prerecorded/animated) data.
And yes I know what Euphoria is.. But it needs to evolve further.

What I don't understand is.... it says "no keyframing"... but how do you make a stick figure wave... without telling how to wave? I mean... you have to keyframe something. You still must have to do animations somehow... as a former animator... I really want to understand how this works.

It's like being a photographer and only a certain cool photo effect can be captured if using a lens made out of diamonds.

At least ragdolls don't look like they're being hurt, they're just unconscious.

Could people please get a clue that the "next generation" has been here for over a year?
