Infinity Ward Rumored as Sole Call of Duty Dev, Activision Labels Reports 'Erroneous'

Addressing rumors that Call of Duty creator Infinity Ward will soon be the sole developer of the hit franchise, publisher and studio owner Activision has labeled the claims as "erroneous."

The reports first emerged from Next-Gen, which cited an ex-employee from Activision's soon-to-be-closed Foster City studio.

According to the source, Infinity Ward had somehow renegotiated its contract with owner Activision to become the sole developer of the Call of Duty property following Call of Duty 5, which is reportedly in the works at Call of Duty 3 developer Treyarch.

This act then supposedly contributed to the upcoming closure of Activision Underground, which the source claimed was working on a third-person Call of Duty title in addition to the "late and over-budget" PlayStation 3 port of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

The ex-employee noted that by introducing a new spin-off series, Activision would have the ability to release up to two Call of Duty titles a year. The last Call of Duty release, the Infinity Ward-developed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, PS3, X360), sold over seven million units in less than two months.

this would be a good thing. CoD3 was terrible in comparison to 2 + 4.

COD3 didn't exist, as far as my PC is concerned.

really? I thought Treyarch did a great job. I went in skeptical but I ended up really enjoying it.

I wonder how well it sold. I mean, CoD4 outsold fucking Halo 3 on the 360 (depending on who you listen to). It would make sense that if CoD4 outsold CoD3 so much that they wouldn't bother with a CoD5 from the same CoD3 developer.

The thing is, I bet most of the people who buy these games don't pay attention to the actual developer. I've actually been told by somebody that CoD3 was made by the same people as CoD2 because it had "Activision" on the front of it. I think a lot of the popularity of CoD4 is going to carry over to CoD5 regardless of who develops it because a lot of people just don't know any better.

It's true. Most people have no idea what a development house is, nor do they care.

Though, it matters very much to the competitive scene, and that's where a FPS' longevity comes from. It's why Halo 3, despite having sold as many/more units than CoD4, isn't nearly as popular among clans and such. It's why no one half serious quit playing CoD2 when CoD3 was released.

Haven't they learned that the Treyarch can't make a good game?

I mean, I know Activision is hoping to ride the coattails of CoD4 and advertise their game with a shitty CG grailer when CoD5 comes out, and then when Infinity Ward releases CoD6, they'll be busy telling people disappointed with CoD5 that CoD6 is the REAL CoD and is still worth buying.

When COD2 was in development, there were rumors about the alternating of developers for the series. IW did the original, 2 and 4, while Grey Matter did UO and TreyArch did console only 3. Following this progression, it would seem that another Activision development studio will do COD 5 while IW works on 6.
