Rumor: GTA 4 DLC Includes Entirely New Cities

In case you were still on the fence about buying

href="http://www.shacknews.com/tag.x/Grand+Theft+Auto+4">Grand Theft Auto IV because

you thought one city just wasn't enough fun to explore, you may just have to

reconsider.

A recent CVG print article

taking a look at GTA IV has some exciting news regarding Rockstar's plans for future downloadable content. Here is the quote via

"Of course to call games as vastly ambitious as Vice City or San Andreas mere
'expansion packs' seems childish, but nevertheless, the downloadable content coming for
the Xbox 360 version of [GTA IV] has repositioned those games in just this way.
"[GTA IV's expansions] are to GTA IV what Vice City or San Andreas were GTA III. Yes,
Rockstar is clearly hinting at new downloadable cities; and the chances of them being
London, Vice City or SA again are slim to none. So that's new as in brand new. GTA IV's
Liberty City is the beginning. Think about that and be excited."

Considering that Grand Theft Auto IV is already expected

to bust through $400 million in sales before a single expansion is released, publisher Take-Two can surely see the profit train on the horizon.

If this is the case, then why bother releasing the game on the PlayStation 3 at all? Since the Xbox 360 is getting the exclusiveness of the downloads to begin with and if those downloads are going to be entire new cities, then the PlayStation 3 version of the game is going to be at such a disadvantage that it's not even really worth releasing in my opinion.

You guys are way overreacting here. This is a rumor and should be treated as such.
Nobody from Rockstar have confirmed anything about what the DLC will be. And I find it highly unlikely that they'll create whole cities just for DLC's come on! The only thing they have said is that "it will be worth the money" that does not mean it can't be episodic content or just some new island you unlock. I'll be buying it for my PS3 for multiplayer (all my friends have PS3's, I only know one other person who has a 360 - we're from Denmark, we are weird that way) and if the content then turns out to be this overwhelming, then sure, I'll get it for 360 as well. But I doubt it very much.

GTA 4 Will be an awesome game, regardless of the platform its brought on, so why don't you retarded fanboys STFU and play your freakin games. i have a ps3 and a 360, ill be buying it on 360 because i prefer xbox live, and i don't give a toss if i have to pay to play online, or if my console sounds like an aircraft taking off when i press on, im just glad i can happily play my games.

With large DLC comes a question nobody has answered yet:

When the next-generation consoles come out, can we migrate our DLC?

Changes are the next-gen consoles will have backwards compatibility with on-disc games (at least the MS and Nintendo ones; Sony don't seem to give a shit about BC lately), but what about all the downloaded games we have invested in from Xbox Live Marketplace and Wii Virtual Console?

If all of that stuff vanishes or has to be bought again then that is going to fucking suck. It pissed me off enough that Apple wanted me to buy the cheap Sudoku etc. again when I upgraded from my 5.5gen iPod to an iPod classic. I've invested a lot more money in my Xbox, Wii and PS3 downloads.

Just to clarify because some people seemed to have missed this point in the whole DLC debate. Microsoft gave $50 million to Rockstar as an advance against royalties. The theory of course is that if R* didn't sell enough copies then MS would have been hooped, but we all know that's not going to happen. It wasn't a straight out cash payment.

As someone with all three systems (plus a DS and a PSP, plus and always up to date PC)...I was torn on which version to get...the PS3 or 360 version...but I think this should help me make up my mind (if I ever get broadband out here (though it seems like it may be 5-10 years before anyone gets around to offering it out in this black-hole) I can get new stuff).

Just curious...but does this deal block them from making PS3 expansions available standalone at retail?

Where are the stories to verify that Sony payed off R* last generation for exclusivity? I've always just assumed it was developed for the PS2 first because, you know, the installed user base for the PS2 was quite a bit larger than anything else. Am I wrong?

I recon it's hard to simply expand the city with more sections/boroughs.

The airport makes perfect sense here.. You can make as many cities as you want once you have the ability to buy a ticked and board an airplane. The core gameplay and engine are complete, additional cities won't take as much time as developing the entire game from scratch (although additional voice work, mostly Niko/main characters, are needed if not already done).

as cool as it would be, i honestly think these people are grasping here, it's nothing but rumor and speculation.

i'm sure the DLC is going to rock, but they won't be whole new cities aka entirely new games you are going to download. i can't see rockstar being that ambitious with ADD-ON content when they could sell it as another stand-alone $60 game. who comes up with this shit :(

As long as the included city is equal to the amount of gameplay I got from the previous titles, totally awesome. BUT if the included game play is some how half of what the previous games provided for the same price then I'm going to get pretty damn annoyed. for the moment though, I;ll just assume the game on its own is all i need to be happy and this is just pure extra goodness (Which I'd probably just wait to get as the bundled PC version later.
