There's a known "mindset" among the most technical of people, and that mindset is always to do The (technical) Right Thing, regardless of what sane business practices, marketing, or the "fat cats" think is best for the Company. Carmack just wants to do The Right Thing and he's proven that over and over again. One of the more recent notables could be the Quake source release. He said that he had to lobby the other owners of id for a long time to make this happen (at least partly because of their fears of how this could affect the Company).
