Rumor: Nintendo May Unveil New DS at E3
by Chris Faylor, Apr 11, 2008 3:02pm PDTRecent comments from Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain, have ignited a wave of speculation that Nintendo may announce a new version of its wildly popular Nintendo DS handheld at this year's E3 Media Summit.
The offerings of Enterbrain include the gaming publication Famitsu, which is typically among the first to report on new games and details.
According to Bloomberg Japan, Hamamura noted his belief that Nintendo could unveil a new DS at E3 this year, which runs from July 15-17.
It was unclear if he was referring to a simple redesign or an actual new dual-screened platform. Given that the system regularly tops sales charts in North America and Japan, a revised version of the existing hardware would be the most logical assumption.
When asked for comment, a Nintendo representative apparently told Bloomberg that the company could make no comment at the time.

Gameboy - 1989
Gameboy Color - 1998
Gameboy Advance - 2001
Nintendo DS - 2004
Forgetting the nearly 10 year gap between the original B&W and the Color, Nintendo's working a 3 year release cycle. You can't factor in game or handheld sales at all. Nintendo's portables have always been huge at retail. Nintendo tends to count on backward compatibility.
So.... It's been nearly 4 years since the DS was released. I'm betting it's not a simple update. My guess is that it's DS2 or Gameboy2 that'll be debuted.
Keeping with their backward compatibility trend, I'd guess that they probably go for a disc-based format, but have a dual format cartridge slot. It'd suck for those game that need both GB & DS carts at once, but it'd stick with their trend of maintaining their huge back catalog. Plus, it'd allow them to move forward with a new format similar to PSP.
