EA Drops Battlefield: BC Pay-to-Play Weapons Plan

30

Following numerous complaints that surfaced after it came to light that Electronic Arts would offer weapons for EA DICE's Battlefield: Bad Company (PS3, X360) for sale on the Xbox Live Marketplace, the publisher has decided to not go ahead with these plans.

It was previously reported that 5 exclusive weapons would be available through various free promotional programs, while another 5 would be available with the Gold Edition of the game or on the Marketplace. GameSpot notes this is no longer the case: "Instead, those who purchase the Gold Edition will receive the weapons out of the box, while all others will gain access to the weapons by ranking up their online personas to the maximum level".Added producer Karl-Magnus Troedsson, "[...] DICE is built upon the multiplayer community, and we do listen to what people say out there. When we saw this big uprise about people that really felt it was dissatisfying that some people bought the Gold Edition, those five weapons you couldn't get or that you had to buy if you had the ordinary version of the game, that we just decided that all weapons will be free in the game, and that's how it is now."

I thought EA was all bad? Sounds like maybe they will listen to the people.

I have a feeling this wad decided before the video came out. Just convenient timing which will make them feel as if they had accomplished something.

I'm pretty sure EA doesn't give two shits about an internet forum boycott.

Honestly, I think it has to do with all the bad press and people reacting. And I'm really, really glad to see they were smart enough to back down.

Agreed. Though part of that "outcry" did come from all the forums and blogs that decried this move.

I'm glad to see them dropping it, I hope they never try it again.

Though, knowing EA, they'll just wait a while and hope people forget this little incident, then it try again.

I also agree. Though I think someone in EA accidently realized they were fascists....yeah we better not play favorites anymore...

"we just decided that all weapons will be free in the game, and that's how it is now."

I took them a public outcry before they realized that maybe charging people for guns in an FPS might be a bad idea. That quote just screams EVIL even if they did manage to listen to people.

EA can suck my balls, they may have fixed this, but now ridiculous Rock Band price in Europe, after a year still no patch for C&C3 on X360, and they constantly rip people off selling them DLC that's actually on the disc.

Well, you still have to participate in an undefined marketing program to get the guns... After you reach the max level.

Well EA was doing well for a while there then they pulled this, but now they're back in good graces with a lot of gamers.

Now they just need to get on Steam dammit

EA could send $100 checks to everyone who complains, and there would be something wrong with that. "Too little money"
"How come its a check and not cash?"
"How come we get dollars in Europe and not euros?"

EA only listens when people say they aren't going to buy a game. I don't think they were ready for so much flack about DLC, conquest mode, clan support,etc.. We'll see. As jeffmace said earlier, I'll believe that they listen when I see a conquest mode in there...
