BioShock 2 Job Listings Suggest PS3, X360 Editions, Drop Small Story Tidbit

13
Five job listings for BioShock 2 have appeared on Gamasutra, offering new tidbits on the possible platforms and story of the narrative-driven shooter sequel.

Revealed earlier this year and due out at some point between August and October 2009, BioShock 2 is currently under development at 2K Marin with the involvement of series creator Ken Levine. No platforms have been announced, though the original released simultaneously on PC and Xbox 360.

While all five roles--senior designer, lead designer, character rigger/animator, senior animator, and FX artist--generically list PlayStation 3, Xbox and Wii under platforms, nothing else within the job descriptions implies a Wii edition is underway.

However, the text for the role of senior designer specifically notes that PlayStation 3 experience is required, strongly suggesting that a PlayStation 3 version of BioShock 2 is being developed alongside the possible PC and Xbox 360 editions.

Additionally, the job listing for character rigger/animator reveals that the game will take place within the fictional underwater city of Rapture.

"You will assist in creating the thousands of animations required to make the world of Rapture compelling and richly layered," it reads. "Come and embrace your inner Frankenstein."

While a return to the setting of the first game is not all that surprising, given the conclusion of BioShock and the persistent rumors of a prequel, it suggests that BioShock 2 could detail the events that led to the original game, including the rise and fall of Rapture.

I loved, Loved, LOVED Bioshock. I just finished it on the 360, and I got the "good" ending as a reward for not being a immoral prick. I will replay it in the near future, where I WILL be the immoral prick and try for the evil ending. That being said...

I am sort of worried about the concept of a sequel/prequel. Andrew Ryan is one of the great game personalities to come about in some time, and I would love to spend more time in his world, but I worry about spending time in a predefined outcome. Say what you will about the newer Star Wars movies, but there was never any hope that they would ever be what you wished them to be BECAUSE you always knew what the eventual outcome would be, and they had to compete with what you already imagined in your own head, which was probably better than what they churned out. A prequel is quite risky.

A sequel would have to take place a fair bit in the future, as Rapture is all kinds of decayed in Bioshock 1, so I would imagine that some sort of renaissance/rebuild of the city would need to occur for the city to be realized again and be a different experience than Bioshock 1. But without Ryan, I don't know if it would hold the same eccentric charm, or even have a reason to exist at all.

I would love to play a new game, I want a sequel/prequel, I just don't know if I will be happy with the result :(

You know i'm surprised no one brought up this point when the prequel for STALKER was announced. In fact no one has really brought up the point, perhaps we should trust the studio to do something amazing, and then if they don't deliver, well pitchforks never lost their usefulness.

I think the team who did Bioshock did such an amazing job... I'm confident that whatever they come out with will be excellent. I'm not worried about it. System Shock 2 came out pretty damn good...

And about it coming out on PS3... I'm basically an Xbox 360 guy... but I think the more people playing these games the better. I feel bad for PS3 owners who haven't played Bioshock... they are really missing out.
