Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Mar 31, 2008 7:31pm PDTAlright, well hopefully you guys will excuse the mess we had today as one would hope
that is the final time. You web developers out there probably wouldnt believe how old some
of the libraries we had running around here were. We've pretty much upgraded everything
now though and as a result things are already generally faster. The hope is to increase
that about 6X by the end of the week. Let us pray! As for the evening nonsense:
- Crazy GPS changes
- A really old leaf
picture
- Spam still sucks
- Al Gore kicks off
href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/03/31/gore.environment.ap/index.html">global
warming campaign
As for the the videogame news around these parts for today:
- Hollywood Tapped for Original Xbox
Live Videos
- PlayStation Store Redesign
- 'Still Alive' Hits Rock Band X360
Tomorrow
- Gears of War Movie Expected in
2010
- New Call of Duty 4 Map Pack
Arrives April 10
- Workplace Removal of Solitaire
Prompts Outcry
- Creative Rallies Against Custom
Driver Creator, Reverses Decision
Lastly, I have given up on FireFox. I tried total purges of all install files and
registry entries to total reinstall the thing but no matter what I do and what
about:config variables I fuss with the thing is just assy slow and dies on DNS in many
cases. I suppose it is probably a good thing to have at least one person on our team using
Internet Explorer though. I will miss you FireFox. I'll see you again when version 3 is
final!

For example: The "Simon Says" beat-em-up section at the end of "Beyond Good & Evil," the "puzzle" aspects of the end bosses of both "Max Payne" games, most item-based adventure games, etc.
Looking back over your gaming histories, what would you say are the worst examples of "fuck you, you're going to beat me this way and that's that" you've ever encountered?

I truly feel bad for the people who through no fault of their own are facing hard times because of the current economic problems in the US today. But more often than not, it really does seem that the people who are getting the most affected by this are people who are idiots and should have known better.
The other day I read an article about a lady "suffering" from the sub prime fallout, because she got an interest only loan on a 500k house and she was laid off. This woman only made 70k a year. What the hell was she doing with a 500k house?
I hear economist yap all the time about the falling house prices. Housing prices were artificially inflated as it was anyways. Why is everyone so surprised that they are falling? When someone can feasibly sell a trailer for 100k, the market is over priced.
ugh.../rant.

Perhaps something a little lighter like The Mist or Jumper. I've still not seen Die Hard 4 or The Bourne movies yet. The Bourne movies get a fair amount of shack love right?

I've seen people complaining that this day sucks because it's now so overdone and boring.
However, do you have any sites that you actually look forward to reading on April Fools? Sites that while doing the expected, pull it off in a hilarious way that makes it worth it?
I only have one: ThinkGeek. They come up with the most hilarious and awesome fake products.
Last year this was one of them: http://www.thinkgeek.com/apparel/hats-ties/9352/
But they got tons of emails saying that it NEEDED to be made real so they did.

What are some shackommended (that means recommended, by the shack) sources for educational/documentary/factual/interesting/creative themed podcasty duverwhackers?
I'm starting to get a bit bored just listening to music while I'm cycling - I can't really seem to switch off and scoot along like I can when driving. I'm hoping some meaty design/science/educational podcasts will keep me more interested while on the bike.
I have no idea what's what when it comes to podcasts. The only stuff I've checked out was a few episodes in an Adobe series discussing the impending release of Flash and the CS3 suite. Something a little broader would be nice - but if there's some amazing design/interactive focused stuff out there I'd be stoked. I've mostly been hunting for some sort of credible and well produced adult education series - even math related if it's well put together. Hopefully there's stuff out there as kickass and diverse as the BBC Horizon docos and TED presentations in audio format with regular episodes - so I can subscribe to it - and always have something new and educational to listen to when riding.
Just no celebrity gossip, game, sports, or political recommendations; I spend way too much of my free time jerking off to fan-art of the TF2 Heavy barrel-deep in Britney Spears' strung-out vadge with a spun-up Sasha firing full force as part of his contribution to her weekly STD containment efforts to spend my work-out time paying attention to the same inconsequential fluff.

What a crock of shit, the trailer is 95% cg :( The worst part of that is that all the cg looks really fake too.

(CBS) At the age of 19, Murat Kurnaz vanished into America's shadow prison system in the war on terror. He was from Germany, traveling in Pakistan, and was picked up three months after 9/11. But there seemed to be ample evidence that Kurnaz was an innocent man with no connection to terrorism. The FBI thought so, U.S. intelligence thought so, and German intelligence agreed. But once he was picked up, Kurnaz found himself in a prison system that required no evidence and answered to no one.

The reunion tour you all have been waiting for is going to happen! I really thought this was an April Fool's joke, but it appears to be legit! The official announcement is happening Friday on the Today show.

case in point, in the old software, i was able to search the online database to label music i have on my computer, even change entire albums so they reflect the correct information. now in the new release, it either finds it on it's own, or it doesn't. i don't see anywhere where i can search for the artist or song myself to update the files.
Another thing is that i recently deleted all the music from the device because of the asinine syncing added the files multiple times, thus making me have 3 copies of some of the songs. Now that I deleted them, the software says there's no music on the device, but when I disconnect it, there's still about 100 files left.
this thing is awesome when it works, but getting it to work properly is a royal pain.
