Supposed Dawn of War 2 Details Emerge

29
The first details on Relic Entertainment's upcoming sci-fi RTS sequel Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 (PC) have reportedly emerged from the most recent issue of Dutch gaming magazine PCGameplay.

According to fan translations over at the RelicNews Forums, Dawn of War 2 will sport multicore processor support, DirectX 10 optimizations, and incorporate several elements from Relic's WWII RTS Company of Heroes (PC), such as environment destruction and the ability to occupy buildings.

While only two forces were listed in the article--Orks and Space Marines--both will feature full co-op campaigns. Though other playable races will be revealed later in the year, it was implied that not all will have co-op campaigns.

The fans also report that players will be limited to six squads at a time, at least in the campaign, though each can be customized with new items and equipment. "You really have to look out for your squads and don't treat them like cannon fodder," wrote translator Togra.

Said to be in development since September of 2005 by a team of 55 people, Dawn of War 2 is expected, at the very soonest, in early 2009. More concrete information, including screenshots, should arrive in the near future.

Um...save your ammunition. I would expect DoW2 to be exactly that.

Only the demo, pretty shitty. Chaos Gate was the only half way decent 40K game before DoW. :/

Final Liberation was cool, but outdated at the moment of it's release. It also tanked, so we never got any other races than orcs and imperials. It had kickass cutscenes though.

Yeah, i also find interesting that limit, if it's true in the end. Some people are already complaining, they don't understand that if the limit is six squads, there will be a finer control and more complex gameplay to compensate the small number of units.

          I wonder what it means.

Right now in DoW, you can have 20 cap, with each squad taking 2+. That's about 6. (However, you get the same thing with vehicles, so that almost doubles it.) So it might not be that different.

However, it sounded like there was less base building, and more "these are your squads, don't let them die." It sounds a lot like the first (EXCELLENT) Ground Control. I could live with that, but it wouldn't be the same as DoW at all.

According to the previews that limit was for the campaing. No word yet about MP.

The thing that has always made the "meat grinder" aspect of DoW seem out of character to me is that the Space Marines are supposed to be these highly valued, trained, and enhanced soldiers. I read somewhere that it is supposed to takes years for a SM to complete their training and only 10% live through it. I think you would be a little more careful with how they are used instead of just rushing a ton of them at the enemy.

Eh, but what do I know?

P.S. I hope there is some sort of open multiplayer where we could have persistant squads and battlefields or something. A wholesale Copy and Paste of CoD4's advancement system would be great as well.

Space marines are always gimped for gameplay reasons. In ficion, they consistantly rape most of the other races. This is soldiers that can pull off hatches from main battle tanks, spit acid and survive naked in vacuum for half an hour.

Holy shit, yes. I certainly hope that's exactly what they are doing. Tactical combat ala CoH. That game still rocks my socks off.
