Netflix Subscribers Surveyed on X360 Streaming
by Aaron Linde, Mar 26, 2008 3:30pm PDTOnline movie rental house Netflix has issued a survey to subscribers gauging interest in streaming movies via Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, Reuters reports.
Netflix would not say if the survey signaled any plans for a partnership with Microsoft to deliver streaming movie content to the console, but noted that it wanted to deliver content by as many means as possible.
Speculation of such a deal had previously ramped up at last month's Game Developer's Conference, with rumors of an announcement surfacing after the distribution of a similar survey a week before. Microsoft would not comment on the rumor, asking press to simply "stay tuned."
The incorporation of Netflix into Microsoft's movie download service would fit the company's claims that digital downloads, rather than disc-based media, are the future of multimedia content for gaming consoles.

i'm guessing they're going to let netflix test the waters and take on all the risk of this time, and if things prove successfull they'll either come up with their own service and/or buy netflix out.
then again, i don't think the post said anything about netflix being IN live yet did it, just that they were curious whether customers would want them there. which microsoft could take as a hint that they should offer their own version of the service (i.e. start negotiating with the studios right now) and tell netflix to buzz off.

Now MS just needs to wake up and smell the revenue stream. Stop gouging us on hard drive prices already! >:(

That said, their current offering's quality is just crap. If they want this to be relevant they need to up their offering on the 360 considerably. I'm talking better than Xbox Live quality (which isn't so either).

There are actually 3 different plugins now to stream the free movies to windows media center, but you currently can't stream it to an extender. Personally I would want this to be a plugin that would work with media center but from the way it was worded looks like it would probably just be to the console.

Give me a full library of high quality movies via digital distribution, for a monthly membership fee and not a few bucks per movie, and I'm all over it.
The technology and at least the beginnings of a customer base are there. We just need the content made available.
