Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Mar 21, 2008 6:00pm PDTSo Maarten and I are checking out Army of Two a little bit this weekend and we are
mostly just looking forward to slapping each other on the ass in a video game. We've
waited a long time for this moment.
- Chasing ghost photos
- Verizon, AT&T win
href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/03/20/airwaves.auction.ap/index.html">wireless auction

- EndWar Footage Released

It may not be so much specifically on that song, but the fact that I've yet to really master ho-pos; I cannot help but to try to strum every note. Mind you, I know I'm getting better; I've gone back and I can get to the 7th tier on GH2 Expert without significant problems (save for Freya that took a while), but again, I'm usually star powering/overdriving through the fast note sections. Has anyone found a good place or a way to learn how to do ho-pos effectively and ween myself off the strumming action?
(And FWIW, I prefer the GH3 wireless for all these games - I am nowhere as good with the RB controller).

A buddy of mine has a quad-core Intel machine with an 8800GTX and on some COH MP maps we'll play for about 2 minutes and then his monitor turns off as though he's gone into sleep mode or shut down his PC.
Anyone else have this problem? Google gave no answers :(

He goes through all episodes, both expansions and further user made levels, getting 100% on everything all on nightmare. It's fun to watch and a nice little trip down memory lane... even the commentary is mostly fun and interesting.
There was one instance where the level didn't spawn one last monster or something so he creator of the thread posted:
"Also looks like this is now a 99,9% run, since one of the scrags wouldn't appear no matter what I did. Which is weird as fuck, because I tested all the levels for consistency about a week ago. I'm reformatting my computer today and installing Quake anew, let's hope that fixes both the scrag problem and the desync. In the meanwhile, you guys think of a condition for the next level so that I may repent this inexcusable wrong I've done."
Which is hilarious. He received a reply of:
"Swap your step left and step right keys around and invert the mouse. "
And so for the next level he did. E1M5 with inverted mouse and swapped strafe keys:

I know some of you guys work with this stuff and have experience.
So my question is:
After installing ISA2004 (from the Tech CD) on a SBS 2003 Premium, what else do i have to make ISA to be able to identify computer clients with their respective Active Directory usernames ?
Right now all clients come up as "anonymous" .

Well, my guy finally died. L45 at the end of Act 4. The monster was a Dactyl gigante, 3 minutes from Hades. ibrokn aka Leeroy Jenkins in-game was the only other player in game. He died too. Twice. We went ahead and killed Hades anyway just to see it. I had max resists (80+ to all, including stun), 5000 HP, and I simply got stunlocked taking 2000 dmg every half a second. Only enough time to drink one potion. I knew dactyls existed and were a risk, and could have certainly survived if I just let LJ clear the path to Hades and stood back a screen or two away. But that's not really playing the game, now, is it? ibrokn hadn't heard of Dactyls before, and it was 2am and I had already talked about quitting and saving Hades for later. But... he talked me into it, and aside from that Dactyl, we steamrolled everything. Machae archers? Minibosses? Hades himself? No problem. It was fun.
My archer had just come into his own, too. 900+ DPS using a purple bow, Tracker Hood and Apollo's Will. Oh well. I did not delete the char, because it makes a convenient gear mule. But, if I continue playing, I will remake and try a new skill tree. I may stick with an archer, actually, since I have some gear for him and they are good for boss runs. But I think I will play non-hardcore and pick a second skill tree other than nature. From what I have gathered, playing the game in hardcore mode and beating epic/legendary is essentially impossible unless you use offscreen exploits with long-range spells or rogue traps. That's no fun. Anyway -- What goes well with hunter/bow? Perhaps warfare, perhaps dream. Any suggestions for good bow/pierce synergies?
I do appreciate all the support and fun I've had with other shackers rooting me on. I hope people continue playing TQ, because I will one day want some company in epic/legendary difficulties!
hardcore challenge: like Diablo 2, the goal was to beat the game without dying. It was my first character ever in TQ, and he finally ate dirt.

Now I've decided to go through the Ryan novels in chronological order through the story, instead of when they were published. That means Without Remorse is up next. Im looking forward to this one. I trust the Shack's opinion that this is Clancy's best novel.

I even caught the last few letters of the name on the back which could have been Ferrari or Carrera. Neither of which made much sense.
Any ideas? Post pics.

Yes I know it was just one song and it was on CompuServe of all things, but it's just interesting how it's taken the music industry this long to figure out if this was a good idea. Seems Imeem is now hosting the song (legally, I assume) for old time's sake.
Not trying to incite a flame war, just found this interesting is all.

We met at Action roommate's place (which is in a really nice area) and we walked over to the Black Friar Pub. Great times were had.

What brought this on originally was that I was trying to find my DVD of The Witcher and was having no luck. So I figured I'd do some sorting since it was long overdue and find the game while I was at it.
Well I finally got it done and guess what? Still no Witcher.
Then I remembered it was still in the DVD drive of the computer I replaced a month ago
Goddam.

Since completing Mass Effect, I've wanted to continue a similar experience. It's been a bit difficult.
Deus Ex doesn't really fit. Tabula Rasa was great for the first month, but I haven't decided to renew just yet (I was having fun, but I'm in a dispute with a fraudulent ebay seller who was supposed to send me the collector's edition and instead sent the regular edition which I already have. It was $14, so no biggy). I have Hellgate: London and while it's an awesome game now, it's a little dark for me to be in it/playing with the same frequency I want to be playing. I played KotOR but got bored to death on the first planet. I'm leery of KotOR 2 because of it's purported bugs and the gameplay slowness of KotOR. I'm also leery of Advent Rising. I even went as far as trying to get a somewhat similar experience and was somewhat successful in ET:QW in that you "level up" with skills as you play and have directives. It's a stretch, but it kinda works and I really like the game. After the rewarding experience of completing the Chetwood Quest in Neverwinter Nights, I briefly searched for SciFi mods and came up empty. I know there's a Firefly mod somewhere, but I stopped my search. I know NWN2 is available, but I haven't checked the mods available for it. The Chetwood experience reminded me what real RPGs are like rather than the seeming game on rails experience you see/have with many games these days. While that isn't a bad thing, it was a nice reminder of how RPG games once were not too long ago.
In looking for a similar experience, I came up with Battlefront 2 and Republic Commando. Both were on sale at Wal-mart for under $10. While there's no leveling up to my knowledge, there is pretty cool gameplay to be had in both. I'm still undecided (though will likely get) on getting Mass Effect for PC. While it is Bioware, I prefer playing on PC and I wanted to play through Mass Effect at least one more time, I'm not certain that I want to get it at launch. Neverwinter Nights had TONS of content out of the box (around 100 hours or something like that), while Mass Effect is somewhere around 15-20. They've stated both that there won't be mod support for Mass Effect and that there might be one day. That's enough for me to put it's purchase on hold for a while. Part of what I liked about Mass Effect and Tabula Rasa were the settings. Star Wars as a setting is starting to wear thin on me. While I'm eagerly anticipating The Force Unleashed, Star Wars is starting to feel empty or maybe just overly rehashed for some reason. I have played both Battlefront 2 and Republic Commando before and seriously enjoyed them. So, before I open up these two $10 jewel cases from Wal-mart, do you guys have any suggestions? I think I'd get more fun out of those two than another month of Tabula Rasa. I may renew Tabula Rasa again one day, but I'm trying to keep my spending under $20 for now (Tabula Rasa is $14.95 to renew for the month). Not spending a dime is good. I have GameTap, but I couldn't think of anything off the top of my head that was similar in experience (and yes, they have Deus Ex "1" & 2). Thoughts?
