Prey 2 Details, Concept Art Emerge
by Nick Breckon, Mar 15, 2008 12:37pm PDTThe follow-up to Human Head's first person shooter Prey has been officially confirmed to be in development via a now-removed website for the new middleman company Radar Group.
Though few details were revealed, a small piece of concept art (pictured left) was posted, in addition to a short sentence of plot detail. Following our initial report, the bulk of the website was taken offline.
"This time, abandoned and framed for the disappearance of his family, Tommy escapes an Earth that no longer wants him for a future that cannot survive without him," reads the description.
While 3D Realms' Scott Miller made mention of a sequel following the original game's release, today marks the first update on the project in nearly two years.
Prey 2 was listed for release on PC and Xbox 360, but no other specifics have been released thus far, including whether Human Head will reprise its role as developer. The studio currently has no known projects.

I'm confused. At the end of Prey, Tommy was peacefully rebuilding the bar that the aliens made go kablooey; that kind of implied that things were all good and well once things settled down. It seems kind of silly for him to be framed for it. :(

I was excited to play Prey when it was first announced. Remember the KMFDM soundtrack? The original lava screenshots? I was sad to see it die on the vine, and overjoyed when the IP was picked up and finished.
It was a fun game to play. Sure, it was a little crass, sure, it played on some stereotypes, but honestly if you were seriously offended by anything in Prey you need to be out picketing major movie studios. I'm sure you'll be throwing money at the strippers in DNF, whenever it's released. :)
Prey did some awesome things with perspective and environmental scaling. Textures and sounds were great, the Art Bell stuff was funny, and I thought Human Head did an excellent job taking on someone else's ideas and bringing them to fruition. I also enjoyed the spirit walking quite a bit.
Then again, I love arcade-esque sci-fi/fantasy shooters and can't stand COD4, so to each their own.
Specifically addressing posters ... agreed, the 360 is starting to get a little dated, I'm curious to see if they can push the envelope again graphically. Also, would you people PLEASE stop bitching about FPSs being FPSs? If you don't want to play a shooter, don't play a shooter, but don't get pissed at a game for being the genre that it is.

Prey was an OK game (finished it in one sitting with a buddy), but in a genre as overcrowded as the FPS one it feels like a waste of resources. The story, setting, characters, writing voice acting were horrible. The gameplay was the usual FPS-with-a-gimmick game we've seen a million times before. It's an FPS where you can slow down time! It's an FPS with portals! It's an FPS where the main character wields a magic guitar! Wheee! Just because you add one twist doesn't mean you should just remake the same dark corridor monster shooter again.
I'd really hope that our industry could do better than this. Why do we have to make a hundred Preys for every Deus Ex, Portal or Metal Gear?

Instead of promising the world and delivering something simplistic, generic and ugly, it promised simplicity with new gameplay conventions, and delivered a completely unexpected truly awesome setting.
So few games provide moments like those delivered in the sphere..
The voice acting was bad, the writing was dreadful, and the exposition - oh my god, the exposition - was so fucking horrible that I wanted stab myself to death with a rusty spoon. That bar scene in the beginning of the game, it was so bad that it was physically painful. All the stereotypical indian bullshit that the grandfather character was spewing felt like an insult to my intelligence.
Or that time when the main character says, "this is fucked up". No, it's not fucked up, it's completely bland and unoriginal and derivative - it was fucked up when Quake 2 did the exact same thing ten fucking years ago but with much better execution. This crap is barely even par for the course.
Fuck!

1) I read somewhere that they were basing it off of "authentic Native American lore" but I don't recall any Indian stories about A car mechanic named Tommy rescuing his girlfriend from aliens.
2) I didn't feel a thing when The old guy or the girlfriend died They didn't do a very good job of building the characters in that aspect.
3) not a story telling point, but the portals they were advertising turned out to be nothing but fancy doors.
There were a lot of things I liked but a lot of things I was disappointed in as well. As for the sequel, I'll probably pick it up, but not day one.

If nothing else, the phenomenal customer service I got from Take2 and 3D Realms make me want to support them and I will definitely be buying Prey 2.
