GTA 4 May Hurt Iron Man Movie

The April 29 release of Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) may cause some problems for Paramount and Marvel's Iron Man film, Next Generation reports.

According to Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey, the highly anticipated game "could dampen the potential from Iron Man's theatrical release."

The movie, which stars Robert Downey Jr. (pictured left), is slated to arrive on May 2, a scant three days after GTA4.

Last fall, several Hollywood executives blamed the arrival of Bungie's Halo 3 (X360) for a 27% drop in ticket sales and the lackluster performance of The Heartbreak Kid, causing some to fear the repercussions of Grand Theft Auto IV's eventual arrival.

"The audience on this game is the 18-to-34 demographic, similar to what you'd see in cinemas," Hickey noted at the time.

I'm a little surprised at all the venom and anger. They're just pointing out that the two major releases are aiming for the same demographic and that there's just a limited amount of time and money for alot of them.

Moreover, I think they may even be looking at the fact that even the GTA IV playing/ironman skipping crew will lower opening weekend numbers which, stupid as it sounds, may mean lower revenues later on. That is, if Ironman opened with the biggest opening weekend ever, beating Spiderman 3 or whatever, that headline would make news outlets everywhere and fan the hype flames even more. If it opens with a "paltry $85 mil", it'll be seen as kind of a blow.

Fortunately, no one really cares. Hollywood is destroying our childhood one movie at a time. Then they release crappy game movies and make them suck to. Yea we get the picture, if you made a good movie based on videogames, then people might want to play those games. So lets make them suck more and get a quick payout. Movies are going the way of video arcades. Now people can watch high quality stuff at home without the annoyances theatres offer.

It only works if the movie is decent down to bad. If the movie looks great, and from all the trailers this movie does look great, then it will still sell fine. Maybe the opening weekend won't be as hot as it would be otherwise, but the people who want to see this movie will go see it within a few weeks. Video games are fun, but you can only play them for so long. Even if you play GTA4 for 20 hours in a weekend, you still have time to go see a movie. This all assumes that you really want to see the movie. The ticket sales that come from "I don't have anything to do this weekend lets see a movie" will be gone, but then again, at over $30 for tickets and popcorn and soda for 2, nobody does that anymore anyway.

The HeartFuckingBreak Kid? are you kidding me, the 27% drop is sales is not mostly because of Halo 3, it is because the movie was of no interest to a lot of people. Hell it probably is not even the same demographic.

Now Iron Man.... ok the same demographic, but I will still go see it opening night (midnight probably)
