Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Mar 12, 2008 2:56am PDTShall we move to fresh green fields of discussion? Yes, lets. So I know people have been enjoying Super Smash Bros Brawl, but if you're one of the few having issues with the multiplayer, this shackthread might offer you some help. And apparently some Shackers are going to rumble with Bethesda, so good luck to everyone. In news at large, I know you were dying for news about the new Hanna-Barbera Wacky Races. I think I actually might be. :(

360 or PS3?
The biggest game he's looking forward to is GTA IV, but he's not sure if PS3 has any other "must-buy" titles that can convince him to get that system (besides having a Blu-Ray player).

I've been thinking a lot lately about online collaboration, which is something that has been happening for a while with software and web development, but is starting to show up more and more in the arts. There's all kinds of forums now where you can post your most recent sketch, photo, video, or song and others will critique it for you, helping you refine your creative process.
The next step is something I'm starting to get interested in, and that's actual interactive collaboration over the internet. Sites like http://www.indabamusic.com/ and http://digitalmusician.net/ let you 'hire' studio musicians recording in their comfort of their homes for projects you're working on. This is really cool, and really the next step for a lot of things, I think.
What are your experiences with online collaboration, whether it be developing a webapp from the other side of the world, or creating something with someone hundreds or thousands of miles away?

I just got the game, know little about it, but am a D2 and Angband veteran. There is no "hardcore" aka permadeath option in the game, but I am going to play it that way. If I die, I die. Character is deleted and next one is started. Beating the game should be... satisfying. Yes, I will alert the internet with each boss kill or character death.
My first attempt will be a Ranger (nature/hunter). I plan on relying on pets, healing, and bows.

I am running a D20 Modern campaign in an apocalyptic setting, and I would like to tap in to your creative genius for ideas.
The setting right now is basically an all-desert world with a bunch of small settlements that sometimes trade. Think Mad Max basically. None of the people in this world know what caused the apocalypse; just that it happened around 100 years ago. There are plenty of ruins of buildings and roads around and old technology is still fairly easy to come by, although it often breaks.
Anyway, my ultimate plan is to convert the setting in to something really unexpected: It turns out that the desert setting is not common to the entire world; whatever caused the apocalypse is not done doing it to the entire world but rather is still working on it. However, a human resistance has formed and is fighting back against whatever it is (think Terminator 2 but much less dominated by the enemy.)
My main problem is I cannot decide what it is that they are actually fighting. It could be aliens from space coming to destroy life and teraform the world (that would explain the year-round hot desert setting in the areas they have already destroyed) or it could be sentient robots created by humans or it could be something that has lived on earth all along but we didn't know about it. It could be aliens coming from another world like the Orcs in Warcraft, or something more like Doom where it's demons and shit. I could really go any direction but I have no idea what would be the most interesting.
Ideally the campaign would conclude with the players joining up with the resistance and manning the final attack on the mothership or homeworld or hive brain or whatever it ends up being.
I am not creative enough to come up with anything that isn't just ripping off a movie or game! Please to be giving me ideas! And because I know you'll suggest it, I don't think giant dongs attacking Earth would fit with my plans very well.

The whole thing was go into this base, and turn off this switch x 3, then a boss type battle

I still haven't made it past Assault, because I wanted to run through the whole thing again. I had saved in Relic right after getting the sniper scope with the precision rifle. Next time I loaded that save, crash to desktop when the next scripted event triggered. I tried it again, same thing. So I load from the previous autosave; works fine. I understand how complex the whole game is, but seriously, they couldn't iron out gamesaves? Are we regressing back to the era when one would dare not save on a platform out of fear of falling right through it when it's loaded again? WTF?!

The Razer Salmosa is the quickest entry level gaming-grade mouse armed with the fastest tracking optical sensor in the world. Designed to be one of the lightest and most compact mice of its class, it is the ideal mouse of choice for finger-tip grip gamers who seek both speed and control.
Yes, infrared. Hopefully it won't have any of the tracking issues of the laser-based Copperhead (skipping over dust particles) or Lachesis (drifting during low-motion).

I love this idea - the last book had so much going on that the only way to do justice to the story would be to not cut it down to a two hour movie.
