Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Mar 07, 2008 6:00am PSTHowdy Shackers, hows your weekend looking? Fabulous? Fantastic. The ever intrepid Aaron brings hands on experience to the long awaited Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and it sounds like I'm going to buy it. Because I was going to anyway, but I went from being sure, to double sure. Also, Nick brings you another installation of the Replay Couch, with it's plethora of video that covers a wide array of games and genres so give it a look.
And given the day, I should ask what are you guys playing this weekend? Also, Faylor. :(

"The immediate impact of Watchmen was a wave of violent, ugly, and stupid superhero comics."
I'm confused by this sentence. What are they trying to reference here?

ThreeWave 1.7 is up and running!!
Server name: ShackQuakeLive
Server address: q3a.helpmewithmygirlproblems.com (72.44.56.173)
Password: Everyones favorite kind of car from the TF2 servers.
You'll need the following:
Threewave 1.6 Full
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/1354/Quake+3+Threewave+CTF+v1.6+Full
Threewave 1.7 update (I only see it on fileplanet at the moment )
http://www.fileplanet.com/139022/130000/fileinfo/Threewave-CTF-v1.7-Update
1.6 has an installer. The update just needs you to drop it in your C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena baseq3 and threewave folders and overwrite anything.
All game types are installed, so have fun which ones you choose to play! If you've never played threewave before, it starts you off in a portal room that allows people to vote on gametype, maps, etc. It's awesome! Voting is also enabled.
We had a successful test last night on the server. Ran into a few problems including a crash when changing maps. Also, suicidemachine and dmason beat my ass so badly I wanted to cry.
Progress Report:
ghostmac has given me hosting for a website. I'll try to get around to that asap.
Vanilla CTF,FFA, TDM and DM all working.
Threewave 1.7 installed and working! WOOT!
CPMA (Quake Pro Mode) installed but not running yet.
So shit people, get out the q3 disks, install 3wave and get playing!

Anyone have any suggestions? I know there was some guy named Erik Johnson or John Erikson or something. Anyway, people were recommending him. Is he any good, whoever he is?
TIA!

notd665 and I are working our way through the game all co-op like and, while the game has a number of annoying bugs, the gameplay provides for some absolutely hilarious co-op fun.

I have 4 hard drives in my system:
OS -XP & itunes podcasts (160g)
download / temp (300g)
music collection & music production software (300g)
2nd OS -Vista (80g) & archive (200g) [2 partitions, 300g total]
I want to replace all my drives, Im going to grab one of the Samsung Spinmaster 750gig & replace my OS disks. I'll have 3 drives; 1 for XP , 1 for Vista and the 750g for everything else.
I've always been a bit worried about sticking all my data on one drive. I have shitloads of files, is it a performance drop to have 400,000+ files on one hard drive? (i'll end up buying an extra 750g in the future to back up to).
I don't think im forgetting anything... actually I'll prob leave my 300g temp drive in the system for downloads and shit so I don't put extra wear on the 750g.
so, any help? What would you do with the above? thanks!

I've got a four hour layover in Minneapolis tomorrow (10:30-2:30ish), and I really have no desire to hang around the airport, and Google Maps looks like downtown is only a hop skip and a jump away.
Give me something to do (perhaps somewhere to get my snack on) during the layover*
This is entirely contingent on Nashville not imploding tonight with 4 inches of snow and me getting off the ground tomorrow.

I'm looking at the Digital Rebel's right now, but I'm not sure what the sweet spot is for performance/price. There are more models of it than I anticipated.

I'm in the early stages of shopping for an HDTV and went to look at some sets, armed with some basic research I'd done. What struck me the most was how strange movies looked on 120hz displays, looked very similar to British tv shows somehow*.. And what struck me next was how terrible the special effects in Star Wars: Ep IV look in HD.
1) LCD sets suck because they all have what I'll call for lack of a better term 'pixel squirm'. I've asked others about this and very few notice it except me, but I see it on $500 lcd screens and $3000 lcd screens
2) Plasmas suck because despite improvements, there's still burn-in issues
3) DLPs suck because unless you get a really high end one, you'll get rainbow effect
4) Projectors suck because you have to have a pitch black room
I'm sorely tempted to get the last remaining HDTV CRT set they had ... only 32", but I don't need anything too big. 100 lbs is no joke, though. And it's 1080i native.
*my hunch is that british shows are filmed on tape at 30 fps, while most US shows are shot on film, at 24 fps, just like movies, and so have to use 3:2 pulldown on tv's that don't have 120hz. It was a really strange experience though, and I don't know if I could get used to it ... just feels very unnatural, even if it is technically more correct. 3:2 pulldown just looks better to me :(

I have to say it's devastatingly beautiful with some of the most lush prose narrating one of the ugliest (yet absolutely fantastic) stories ever.
I'm not going to lie - there were times I fuckin' balled my eyes out while reading this.
I'm going to have to let this percolate for a week or so and read it again, fantastic book!
Now I absolutely have to get my hands on No Country for Old Men now.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING NOW?

I recently rewatched the SC2 gameplay video released last year, and I'm currently playing through the original game. It would have been nice to see Blizzard create a completely new game, but I'm still pretty excited to see what they can do with SC2.

It managed to get through the opening cinematic, started playing a sound similar to a dying manatee instead of the first line of dialog. It managed to fire one bullet, and then the game went down link a cheerleader on prom night.

I just cant seem to figure out what to do here. I cant seem to jump the gap without drowning, and I tried climbing on top of the cage piece buts its too damn narrow and I just fall off, or dont land on it in the first place. This whole level is hard in a frustrating and not really all that fun way.
The of the game, other the voice acting of a few characters I had to hit mute for, has been fucking awesome.
