Dawn of War Soulstorm Expansion Hits Steam

Valve moments ago announced that the stand-alone PC strategy expansion Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is now available for digital purchase on Steam for the price of $39.95.

Developed by the now-defunct studio Iron Lore Entertainment, Soulstorm expands on Relic's RTS franchise by adding two new races for a total of nine playable factions, with new aerial units appended to each army's arsenal.

All nine races will be enabled for play in the campaign mode, but only those who own the previous titles in the series will have access to the full selection during multiplayer sessions.

A demo for the game is also available on Fileshack.

How many races is too many? 9 is a ton when most RTS's are 3-4 at most.

And that's what makes it different

Well the Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, and Imperial Guard are all members of the same faction. Its better to not think of them as races and more as armies.

But they play as differently as any other race does, really.

There's no point in thinking of them as factions unless you're trying to get into other aspects of 40k, but as far as DoW is concerned, they're different races

Yep, same faction, but they DO cram plasma blasts to each others butts if blamed for heresy.

It doesn't really matter when the majority of the races play fairly similar in style. Sisters/Chaos/Space Marines while albeit different, still largely play the same. IG and dark/elder are mildly similar. Then you have Tau and Necron.

      So really its 4.

Although even then, that is quite a bit. Thankfully everything is balanced. How, I don't know.

Many races have a great deal of similarities, but there are still differences, and the large number is made easier to support due to the existing material on the different races. It really depends on what qualities you're looking at. Necrons, IG, and Orcs are all spam races that rely on attrition to one extent or another, while SM and Eldar do not (Tau and Chaos depends on what squad you're talking about). Eldar and Dark Eldar are both finesse races, though you have to micro them in different ways. Tau are between Eldar and Space Marines to a degree, but those two, IG, and Eldar are very shoot-ey. Chaos is more of a mixed race, but they also have the best fast-tech options in the game. Orcs are dedicated melee, and Necrons are perhaps the most reliant race on infantry. More than anything, with this many races, it's more of a spectrum instead of specific races having discrete differences in strategy.
