Morning Discussion
by Jeff "geedeck" Gondek, Mar 04, 2008 5:00am PSTHowdy Shackers. Some Americans have the chance to vote today, so don't forget to do so if you're in Ohio or Texas. And of course, keep the political discussions friendly, I know the topic can leave people a bit excited. Later on today, I should have the results of your best screenshots.
In community bits, we suffer together through annoying videogame quotes, and then there's the latest in the Shacker TF2 tournament.

Now posting from my brand spanking new PC! Thanks to marmite for building it and Toraz and other shackers for pointing me in the right direction on components.
Having a current game go right ahead and choose all high settings for you is not something I've experienced before... leaves me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

An integrated graphics solution that can run recent games at a playable resolution? Just what the doctor ordered. Not a bad idea at all.

Let's play a thought game. Let's say I want to develop a game with the financial goal, besides at least recouping development costs, of seeing the smallest % copies pirated. Imagine this is the one of the driving forces behind development of the game. What would a game developed with that goal in mind be like?
I think it would have one or more of the following features:
- Aimed towards casual players (grandma is less likely to hit up BT sites)
- Free to play (achievement unlocked - 0% piracy rating)
- Played on closed servers with a significant amount of other players (ie, an MMO)
- Released only on a closed system (ie, XBLA, steam (has steam been cracked?))
- Released only on closed hardware (ie, PS3, 360 - probably not as effective as above item)
What other ways do you think you could you develop a game with a goal of minimizing piracy?

Switcher is a really cool app so I'm going to respost it. I've bound it to open and close with the "App context menu key" on the right side of my laptop keyboard within reach of the touchpad and it is AMAZINGLY useful. Having it right next to the touchpad is great. I can even hit it with my pinky.
Switcher is a really cool OSX Exposé-like app that uses the Desktop Window Manager to provide live thumbnails and all of the really cool effects of Aero. It REQUIRES Aero for obvious reasons but I'm already getting addicted to moving my mouse to the upper left corner of the screen or hitting the stupid otherwise useless app-context-menu key to bring up switcher.
It is highly configurable and allows you to set up a number of mouse and keyboard shortcuts as well as customize the display of windows with overlays and numbers and the like.
Great App, must download for Vista users, IMO. If you are familiar with Expose on OSX, it is very similar.

Well, I made up my mind and ordered a "previous generation" Macbook refurb for $1049. I figure, if I like it, I'll order some more RAM from Crucial. Seems like a good deal to me. So excited!!

i just want to say that this game (http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/142/14222587.html) sucks. and i don't just mean "duh, it's an american idol singing game" sucks.
i have a cold right now but i decided to play anyway. i played on medium and i thought it was weird that i kept getting perfect or near-perfect scores. simon cowell with weird monster teeth didn't insult me ONCE. so i decided to experiment. i set it to expert and basically just made random noises into the mic the whole time. at the end randy told me he liked that i put my own twist on the song, paul abdul called me magical, and simon cowell said i have true star potential.
so yeah, it sucks. anyway, back to barbie horse adventures.

I was just at Best Buy and had a look at the TV's there. I mas looking around at some and some of the 32 and 27 inch TV's are in my price range, but they are 720p.
Will it make that much of a difference at this size to go up to 1080p? How much would I be gimping myself? What I mean is... will I notice a difference at this size?

About 300 people who turned out in what I believe is a fairly small precinct. My ex-girlfriend lives one street away and is in a separate precinct. So the turn-out was VERY high. The lines for Clinton and Obama appeared to be about equal in size. There were only about 10 people there including myself who appeared to be under the age of 40.
Naturally, there was plenty of political talk in the crowd while waiting for the caucus to begin. Several Clinton supporters tried to sway me away from my support for Obama by telling me that "Platitudes don't get the job done.", "Who is he going to put in his cabinet? You have to know people to form a cabinet.", and "He's promising a chicken in every pot, you're too young to understand this." After their barrage of rhetoric, I simply replied that my father is a Republican and voting for Hillary because Rush Limbaugh told him to. Several chimed in to reveal that they too were Republicans. One said "I'm a Republican too, but I'm voting for Hillary because I want her to WIN." Two of the Republican Hillary supporters became very quiet after this comment and left the discussion.
Only 4 people showed up for the Republican caucus.

person1 makes something like 73,000 a year
person2 makes something like 80,000 a year
and because of weird tax brackets, after taxes (considering they have the same amount of dependables etc.) they take home the same amount of money at the end of the year?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081291/
It stars Dennis Hopper and has the most fucked up ending EVER.
But I just watched The Girl Next Door
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0830558/
Netflix comments:
It's a deeply disturbing work and not for the faint of heart.
This movie as about the worst case of child abuse in American History.
The Girl Next Door is the most disturbing, horrifying movie I have ever seen.
Damn, now that is a fucked up movie, and based on real events supposedly.
