Broussard @ Shugashack
by Steve Gibson, Mar 10, 2000 8:00am PSTThe Ask A Developer interviews continue. Last week George Broussard agreed to answer questions submitted by you guys. Here is his interview which quite lengthy keeping in the spirit of the recent Matt Hooper interview. George covers Duke4 (of course), Prey, 3d engines, game violence, and Buffy among other things.
Shack: How robust will DNF's multiplayer component be out of the box? , How many different multiplayer modes will DNF ship with? , and How many multiplayer maps will the game ship with?Broussard: Very robust. We do not believe in shipping now and adding functionality later. Patches should be for bug, not gameplay. I think we are planning 10+ multiplayer maps, but really we have to get down to making them and seeing how much time we have. But I think anything less that 10 is a waste of time. As for multiplayer modes, we're still talking about options. We want to do a couple of different things other than DeathMatch, but we haven't decided yet. Some form of class based team play is appealing to us. <snip>

(this post is flamebait, so dig in. I\'m assuming that you\'ll choose to answer this post instead of my previous, more serious one, as that one kinda debunks your pet theory ;)
There\'s two reasons for this... First, they won\'t know that in the first place. They\'ll look at the screenshots and if they like the look of what\'s there they\'ll buy it. Second, and perhaps more relevant, that\'s an incredibly stupid reason not to buy a game.
I\'d be very surprised if the real reason for the cancellation of Prax War was that they \"missed their technology window.\" Missed their deadlines is probably closer, though who really knows.
#Ominous - Yes.
George\'s quote(concerning missing their technology window):
\"This is a very narrow, elitist 5% online gamer view. Your mass market player (that will push a game over 1 million sales) can\'t even tell between UT and Q3A tech. In fact a lof of die hard gamers don\'t even care. Further, there isn\'t that huge a leap betweeen the two engines. They both do different things, and each do things the other doesn\'t do. In my opinion it\'s a draw and a toss up.\"
First of all, that 5% knows games better then the other 95%, so maybe their on to something. Secondly, gearbox cancelled their game because they missed their tech window(so I don\'t see how that\'s an elitist view). LAstly, ur a prgrammer and u think the UT and q3a engine are toss ups? Now thats just proving that u are either in denial, or ur just trying to convince ur self that u didn\'t fuck up when u decided to switch engines.
Your tune has changed so many times since you started DNF. Try being honest. Blowing smoke is an elitist action...politicians do it all the time when they try to sell u their shit.
I mean if # of players is all we\'re talking about here, really, I can\'t see why you\'d give EQ more credit than DOOM or Myst.
EQ should, of course, enjoy its success while it lasts. As with DOOM, the clones will come, and some of them will be good. The market will be fractured, there\'ll be less players playing any one game, until somebody stumbles upon something else that\'s new. I don\'t think EQ is any more significant than DOOM in this regard, and DOOM certainly influenced games of the 90s more than EQ has.
I have to wonder what you mean by games like DOOM or EQ creating new genres, but then in the same thought mentioning that they weren\'t the first of their game type (which is a paradox). EQ is not the #1 game for # of players and # of clones. Maybe it will be, but it\'s not yet.
Didn\'t DOOM2 sell 2 million copies? Has EQ sold a half million? Count the # of EQ clones available today, then attempt to count the sons of DOOM.
Given that the very game that finances 3dRealms (Duke) owes more to DOOM than any other specific game, I really have to wonder why you\'re so quick to discredit the game.
- You\'re welcome!
UT runs like shit
40fps on a 1ghz machine with geforce
www.anandtech.com
dosent mean it\'s not fun though
UT engine for a couple more years? PUKE. Get rid of that glide beast. I could handel Q3 engine in 2 years...but would like to see some engines made with next gen T&L in mind.
\"
Well..if they have a geFORCE and know that the UT engine game will run ass slow compared to the Q3 engine game they might.....
I love these interactions with the movers and shakers in the game industry. George, you\'re a good sport for coming out here and mixing it up with the core constituency. Give us the content and that Uber Dukish attitudinal gameplay and it\'s guaranteed that word of mouth wiil push sales into the stratosphere. Please do your best to expedite the release of DNF for the rabid fanbase that\'s starving for a topnotch single-player FPS experience. Give us plenty of strippers, aliens, mutants and challenging levels to frag it up on and I\'ll be one happy motherfucker!!
a lot of games start out big and then the middle is all boring and
then they end with a bang (hopefully). duke4 has taken a long
time, and i hope it\'s as fun throughout as it will no doubt be for the
first few maps.
i am disappointed in 3drealms only because we have had to wait
this long. that isn\'t altogether a bad thing, tho right? it means i
can\'t wait to give them my money! :)
good luck with the game guys, just do us a favor and try and
finish it up this year ok? (that\'s not intended as a slam, i just
literally have no idea when to expect this game anymore).

Thanks for answering, being a gamer myself I for one WILL be upgrading if necessary for Duke4, it looks to good to miss. Others however... There\'s people I know who still have 200\'s, and have no intention on upgrading, even though they like the games they see (Half-life, Quake2, both playable on a 200).
Do me a favour, just add \"comedy\" references to Daikatana, Halo, TF2, Indiana Jones (again), Clinton (I bet you got this allready), and a few other cool popular things that people will be firmilliar with (As you did with DN3D) and you\'ve got me sold, them cool little things literally made dn3d 20% better alone... and each one prolly only took a day or 2 to samlple the gfx / audio and pop it in some secret location.
Oh yeah a half life reference is mandatory.... - dont loose focus George, go back and play through EP1 of DN3D for me, I dont need you to fuck up like iD and loose sight of how cool your games once were... do, or do not, there is no try.
You suck :)
That\'s EXACTLY the response we want.
What did you prefer, Wolf 3D with its \"run open shoot\" style game play (or q3 ... ERGH...) or did you prefer half life / any other game with cool shit (dn3d, blowing up buildings, hitting switches to unlock the X and when X is open you can do Y etc)
I for one prefer gameplay with some cool stuff, and less monsters (half life) then when you do see one, fuck it\'s scary... and fun
Good point, I continue to notice these type of responses in each interview with 3DR and no-one points out this fact that they CONTINUALLY avoid answering questions with an answer leading towards \"this game will not be out for a long time, we basically have some maps and an engine, nothing else\"
I love 3DR and I LOVE GB\'s response \"If you dont invite friends over to see some cool shit we\'ve failed\" that\'s exactly the right answer, when a cool game comes out with some COOL shit you always show friends the game and show it off, cause your the \"l33t b1tch\" who managed to get a hold of it... (ala doom)
HOWEVER I dont want a release date, but jesus they really make this game sound \"less than 60% complete\" in most interviews...
Expected minumim is a P400 with 128 ram, whoop-ass video card, suggested will probably be a P600 with 256 ram, even more whoop-ass video card.
Will we all be forced to upgrade for every new game that comes out? Quake 3 Arena - plays like crap on an AMD K6-2@400 with 128 megs of Ram, you have to turn off most of the cool stuff or suffer massive drag. Thing is, most computers sold today to the common joe aren\'t much better than that. What good is a game if only 10% to 20% of the computer market can play it? Geez, I know people that refuse to spend money on a new system just play a game.
Bottom line - the technology is there, but do you feel its really sitting on everyone\'s desk?
Don\'t the flames ever get to you?
Very Good point, but I have many co-workers and friends who ask me what I play and I show them and they like them too. I don\'t show them unreal... And I haven\'t heard of any of them buying it. I know it\'s personal experience and all, I\'m just saying that the enthusiast market must have some filtering on the rest of the market... Shit, Netscape got so popular without a single advertisement in the olden days, simply word of mouth and eye candy...
Focus on Content for Duke, though... which it seems like you are doing. looks awesome by the way For Duke, I could care less about the engine, it\'s the implementation, content, humor and wow factor. UT didn\'t do it for me...
It is an option but he does provide justification for it. I think his opinion and justification sucks.
Yeah, uhm, Q3A and UT are both MMORPGs,
I\'m not compairing them as MMORPGs but as computer games. What I have a problem is the statement \"game of the decade\". Quake and UT both quality.
interface isn\'t a big gameplay issue in a FPS like it is in a RPG.
(Aside: EQ is not a RPG. It is not encouraged nor viable.)
Again, context. EQ. UO. EQ. UO. EQ. UO. Q3. UT.
Computer game, computer game, computer game.
