Warhammer Online Screenshots: Axes and Trees

17
EA Mythic's fantasy MMO Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is still somewhere out there in the beta-testing background. To prove it, Mythic released a few new images of the game today.

These screenshots depict the classic tale of a man cruelly separated from his nature, a simple lumberjack forced to live out his days hacking limbs from men rather than trees. Truly tragic.

Man...lack of shadows really ruins the immersion. Granted, it's an MMO and shadows would make it unplayable, but still. Those screen shots looks so naked. I guess newer gen graphics have spoiled me.

I think at this point a case could be made that they're simply not getting the shadows to work. Or don't want to.

Yeah, they've released some shots with lighting turned on, and they look great. But they were SPECIFICALLY to show that they had a lighting system. You'd think by now they'd be far enough in development to have it turned on more regularly.

There are shadows in the game and the character shadows are a lot better than "that other game". The lighting system is not fully implemented in the beta and it's just at basically fullbright right now.

i'm starting to believe that's bullshit because they keep releasing these ugly fucking shots. why even bother? all they are doing is turning me off :(

Yeah it's very suspicious especially since the the engine shit should be nailed down by now. Lighting should be a priority and releasing poor screenshots hurts the brand instead of generating hype.

If you need evidence, look at the comments everytime they release shots.

how is it bullshit? I'm in the beta and there are quite impressive character shadows and self-shadows. The rest of the lighting is clearly incomplete though. For whatever reason they haven't included the character shadows in these screenshots.

That's funny because these screens look WAY better than in-game actually is right now at this stage.

For sure. Models are good for the most part, but they really need to get environment-shadowing in the game.

This is one of the better screenshots I've found that suggests they actually have any at all, excluding character-shadowing:

It's still not very good though, and needs more detail and contrast.

I do love some of the character-models though! Have a look at these for example:

Now imagine those skulls and bones on their armor being actual trophies of war, now that gets me excited!
